Which 3rd party grader is closest to PCGS??

Judging by market acceptance and realized auction prices it would have to be NGC.

Welcome to the forums. It gets murky as you go farther down the pecking order, but I think you'll find for the most part:

1) PCGS
2) NGC
3) ANACS & ICG?

4+ is a few hundred others mixed in - each person has a preference in this range though. Most perfer to stay away completely, while some don't like to dabble beyond #2. To each their own.

I'd actually go with ICG for circulated and low-end MS coins. They are terrible, IMO, in terms of overgrading moderns but are very good (and very underrated IMO) for the classics below about MS-64.

As far as coins where ICG is out of its league, NGC is probably the closest with consistency. ANACS seems to be hit or miss.

From my own experience in crossovers and very limited scope of collecting, I would take the ANACS coins before the current change in management. I can't vouch for the new stuff because I haven't seen anything since the new management took over.

Probably off topic and off the wall but I imagine it's the 2nd or 1st party grader.

But is there such a thing or any truth to this. I guess I'm just curious. Or is it for the fact that at least 3 pro graders will see a coin before it's time? I would like to think that I'm the 1st party grader, the dealers' the 2nd and an outfit like PCGS is the 3rd party grader. If this is true than NGC, like ANACS were basically 2nd party graders since they took direct submisions from the 1st party.

Well enough of that, I'm just rambling with some thoughts here.

I think the top 4 have overall been pretty respectable for the most part. NGC certainly has attracted the stronger portion not in PCGS holders of higher grade, important rarities. The market has dictated that as a progressive response. Old ANACS was quite good IMO but lost their market over the years and their commensurate valuation. As a result, their best coins have crossed out leaving a deceptively bad impression based on the remnant in the marketplace. The attrition gradient was strongest for the most conservatively graded material. Newer collectors don't have the appreciation as to how well the really did grade on average. ANACS lost some of their most respected and consistent graders. I don't honestly have enough observations of newer graded coins to assess them now. Of the relatively small number of ICG coins I have bought, I am satisfied with their grading. I have seen questionably toned pieced in their slabs, but have in all top TPG slabs. I understand their PR70 moderns don't measure up, but that isn't my area (though I do have a number of 99-P SBA $1s and a 1994 proof set in that grade form them).

My crossover success would imply that old ANACS was pretty close to PCGS. I think they are all (top four) good and better than we often give them credit.

ANACS is in Texas, not the east coast, and there are several fourth tier services that are much closer. Including some in California such as AACGS in Beverly Hills.

You can say that again!! From my experience in what I have been able to add to my collection when seaching through all kinds of slabs, mainly ANACS, PCGS, NGC, SEGS and ICG, I believe ANACS and PCGS make up about 99% of my 300+ certified coins. That's about 4-5 NGC, a couple of SEGS and no ICGs yet. And this is an accumulation over the last 15 years.
I see that we still have believers in NGC as a close 2nd grading outfit. When will they ever learn?

It really depends on what you collect. On modern coins (post 1836, and struck on a steam press with fully hubbed dies), NGC may be similar to PCGS, but for early coins, NGC can be erratic to the point of unreliability. From what I've seen recently, I agree that ICG is a solid #2, especially for circulated early silver.

I have NGC GAE's in MS70 and PR70 that I sent back for a regrade because they had contact dings and scuffs. I got them back a week later with a note that said, "Both of these coins display 'as made' issues which are acceptable for the grade." - Bill Conroy
How can marks on the coins be "as made" issues? Maybe I have GAE VAMS! Yeah right!
I feel NGC has issues due to that. Maybe they are better on other coins though.

I have a couple ICG MS70 GAE and PAE coins and they honestly could get a 70 from PCGS, but I know crossing doesn't lead to that and I'm afraid of cracking them and causing a mark on them, so in the ICG holders they will stay.
Therefore from my own observations, ICG seems like they are closer, but my only observations are 2 bullion coins.

I don't know enough about ANACS to give an opinion on them.
