Coin Bidding Etiquette...Is Sniping another Forum Member "Bad Form"?

You know... your searching eBay (or some other auction site) and see someone else with similar interests already bidding on a coin.
or
A forum member is selling an item and you normally bid by placing snipe bids hoping to get the coin at the lowest possible price.
Is it "bad form" to snipe them?

If I only had a dollar for every VAM I have...err...nevermind...I do!!

I think it'd be sleazy just to snipe something from someone whos opinion you respected, but you had no real interest in the coin itself otherwise (but you were bidding just because it was that person because you wanted to block 'em, or because you thought they were getting a steal, because you think they know something you dont)...
anyway
<< <i>No but running up the price with little to no intention of buying is. I know of 2 people who bid against a forum member several times this year to make him 'pay' for being "jerk" [their words not mine]. The forum member remains unaware and will probably never know they cost him hundreds of dollars in over paying for coins. >>
I better look up the definintion of "jerk" in the dictionary to see who your talking about (hope it's not me).

i sometimes find a rare or odd half eagle on ebay.
i post here about it and sometimes i may even bid,
but mostly the coins are out of my price range.
real classy forum members message me and ask if it
is alright to bid. i respect that.
i imagine if i said i was going for it, they would not bid.
it is class like that, that i find on a normal basis on these boards.

- He paid what he bid. No more.

I'd go out of my way to snipe this guy out of a VAM.
Running up a price without "intention" of winning is OK in my book. If you win at the price you bid, congrats, you own the coin. If you don't win, no problem since another bidder won at a price he/she was obviously comfortable with -- since he/she bid consciously on the coin. I've bid up to a certain amount in various venues in order to ensure certain price points were "protected" for certain rare die marriages.
From the bidders perspective, I would attempt to outbid another forum member if I could on something we both would obviously want.
If a forum member PMs me and tells me they are bidding for a set,
I am usually gracious and bow out. To bid up a price out of spite is
truly despicable particularly when a Forum member is involved. If you
on the other hand are bidding in good faith to win the coin, then that is
totally honorable.

No.
Unless it's a coin that I want, then stay the hell away

That said, if I have a friend who wants to buy a coin that I also want, if he needs it/wants it more than I do, I will often bow out. Some here have told me that it is "illegal" to do so. So far, I have not been arrested, and until the police come to my door, I will continue to so.

My ears are ringing. Just do it. I don't care if you get it for 99 cents. I'll make a killing on the $1.50 S&H.
