So how many Cheerios Sacs really got released??

News release from back then:
Cereal company General Mills also got into the act by placing one new golden dollar in every 2,000th box of Cheerios cereal. These have become very collectible. Undoubtedly many were opened and spent, making original packaged pieces hard to come by. In addition, one of every 4400 boxes had a certificate good for 100 golden dollars.
TOTAL NUMBER OF "CHEERIOS DOLLARS" RELEASED = 5,500.
We never heard of a single instance of somebody redeeming a certificate for 100 of those gems. Most of the 5,500 would have been released through the certificate redemption. Some math expert figure out exactly how many Cheerios Sacagawea were actually released in a Cheerios box compared to how many should have been redeemed through certificate. Then we get alot closer to knowing the real population of Cheerios Sackies.

The redemption was in addition to the 5500 coins put in the boxes.

I must agree with Russ. Now, please pardon my uninformed question - what, if anything, is there to indicate that the "certificate good for 100 golden dollars" has anythng to do with the special "Cheerios" dollars?
