The Ben Franklin Coin and Chronicles sure haven't been a big hit on eBay

Not surprising, the thing was overpriced to begin with.

I have one of each of the proof Franklin Commems. However, I do not see the attraction to the Chronicles set either. I am just too coin driven for my own good. I think you might see the same thing with the Jefferson sets with the 2 dollar bill etc etc . Unless you find the collector who has to have the entire ensemble, folks just want the coins. IMO. Otherwise, its nice in appearance, just not what I would want as a collector. image

Too early to tell. These type of things typically get hot around November on ebay.

Well, I ordered one from the mint and am not really impressed with the product. Aside from the Scirentist dollar, there's not really much more to be said. So, unless the scientist takes off, these should stay pretty low.
I decided to change calling the bathroom the John and renamed it the Jim. I feel so much better saying I went to the Jim this morning.

It appears so far that those individuals who have made money on these sets, were the folks who sold them after the mint sold out, and before they got theirs in hand.

Supply and demand at it's finest, no demand now so you would be better to sit on them and hope demand gets stronger.

Has anyone thought, as more and more people become familiar with the coin market, they realize they can go right to the US Mint and get items before they are marked up 50-100%? Will this inherently make everything less and less valuable as demand picks up at the mint, and more product is minted.

Actually, thats a good question. Given the way Modern Commems have been in conjunction with the state quarter program, I would say no. The publicity and awareness of the public are probably already at the point where they get it at the mint or they do get stuck with the mark up. In fact, I think IMO, we are already there. It does not appear to have diminished demand at all. In fact, looks like demand is even higher than it ever was. IMO

Sorry, common sense will not prevail. When the Indian/Buffalo gold coin goes on sale, my guess is that ebay buyers will pay at least 10% above issue price to get one of these "scarce" investment-grade coins.

Whitby, you are correct. I am saying the same thing, but there is plenty of supply, as more and more collectors know where to get them at "face value." Look at the 1999 Silver Proof Set. If I remember correctly. the mintages on that set are not that much lower than some of the 2000s sets (maybe even more than some of the 2000s sets). Yet, that set is extremely overpriced, while other proof sets minted since are worth much less. In the end, it really makes me think that almost all of the pricing of modern mint sets has more to do with marketing, smoke and mirrors and urban coin myth, than actual supply and demand.

It looks like they have gone up about $10.00 from a week ago.

Why November? Christmas rush? This was what was said about the marine proof and it didn't really pan out

Modern stuff tends to sell better during the Christmas rush. With a huge mintage of 500,000 coins, the Marine comm I think sold and still sells very well on ebay. The American Legacy set containing the Marine proof sold for $250+ during November, not bad for something you could once buy from the mint for $135. The big dealers loaded up on the Franklins and have initially flooded the market. IMO, once this excess inventory is worked through, we'll start to see a some better appreciation. It will take many months though to work through this inventory.

I got quite a bit for my Marine commems. I MORE than tripled my money IIRC.
