Real Paypal E-Mail or Spoof???

segojasegoja Posts: 6,141 ✭✭✭✭
Recieved an e-mail today from "Service@Paypal" asking for unspecified personal info. Obviously didn't use the link in the e-mail. Can't even cut and paste the e-mail as it looks like some kind of text pasted into an e-mail. The font on my name is different than the font of the text.

The e-mail said to log into paypal account using a provided link and the requested information would be asked for.

Logged into Paypal the normal way. nothing unusual.

Is this real or spoof???

Sure you should have used the provided link? I don't know, just wondering.

PayPal never sends emails like this. Just delete 'em.

    You did good!

Can't say for sure. If it used your actual name and not just "Dear PayPal User," it's more likely to be legit. Even so, I'd never log in or provide this information from a link in an e-mail. I'd type in the exact URL to PayPal so I *know* I'm in the actual site, and see if they need what's being asked for.

Most likely it's a fake, though. I don't think major sites are stupid enough to ask for updated information through an e-mail link, as those are assumed (or should be assumed) as phishing scams.
  • I always forward to spoof@ebay.com or spoof@paypal.com

I am never in so much of a rush I can't wait to hear back from them.

This is what a REAL PayPal eMail looks like:

    Dear Russ Stringham,

As part of our security measures, we regularly screen activity in the PayPal system. We recently noticed the following issue on your account:

PayPal occasionally performs credit checks on selected account holders. Your account has been selected to go through this process. We must complete a credit review in order for the warning on your account to be lifted. In most cases, the account holder's personal credit is analyzed using a Social Security number and an address likely to generate a match with a credit bureau. Please log into your PayPal account to provide this information. If an examination of your business credit would be more appropriate, please contact our customer service department to supply your Tax ID number.

In order to secure your account, we would like further information from you. We appreciate your understanding as we work to ensure account safety.

Please log in to your PayPal account to respond to this request. Be sure to log in securely by opening a new browser window and typing the PayPal URL. Once you log in, you will be asked to provide information to secure your account.

If we do not receive a response, we may have to limit access to your account. Limited access protects your account until additional security measures can be completed.

We thank you for your prompt attention to this matter. Please understand that this is a security measure intended to help protect you and your account. We apologize for any inconvenience.

    Sincerely,
    PayPal Account Review Department >>

I did forward to Paypal spoof. They responded very quickly with the fact it was a spoof.

This was a pretty good looking spoof, but I never use links. If legit, they'll be on the website as well.

    Thanks to all who responded.
