Who is going to the Chicago show?

Normally I don't start these types of threads, but I'm curious to know if this event is going to be big, medium or mini.

I'm planning on going on Friday.

If MadMarty is going Friday, I guess I'll have to pony up and pay the $50 early bird fee and get in Thursday.

Otherwise, all the good stuff will already be in Marty's attic.

We will be set up as well.

Not sure the table number, but will be listed under JMS Coins.

Stop by and say hello, and better yet buy some coins!!!

Should be a good show. Normally a mid-large size show. Not quite Baltimore or Long Beach, but a good number of dealers.

I'll be there Thursday so the madman of Chicago will be going home empty handed.

The show is a medium sized bourse attended by many of the top dealers. It is located at the Donald Stephens Convention Center in Rosemont, IL. ANR will hold an auction in conjunction with this show.

I will be there but only on Thursday and until Friday afternoon.

The show ends on Sunday afternoon, but only the full service dealers will be there thru the closing.

With an occasional exception, the ones that leave Thursday or Friday are too important for collectors.

Some that leave late on Saturday just want a day off.

If you are just there to buy coins for other people, why spend the money on a table? If the collectors are just there to kick the tires, who, exactly, do you sell coins to?

I'll definitely show up, as I have for the last four years. Given the above posts, I guess I'll have to miss work again on Friday if I want to see anyone other than the usual local dealers.

Is MadMarty planning another early Friday breakfast this year? I overslept for that event last year on Friday morning, but saw Laura when we lowly collectors were lined up outside the bourse before opening time.

A possible solution to the dealers leaving early is to put them in a section that can be closed off, such as the ANA did at one point.

The organizers of the show advertise and promise; and the show attendees expect and are entitled to dealers that wish to serve them, whenever they attend the event, especially if they are paying an admission charge.

With some occasional exceptions, this should be the rule at numismatic exhibitions, the same way that it is at antique and art exhibitions!

If the dealers don't want to serve the public, give them an area that is off the radar screen for the public.

While I can understand how some of the snooty, egotistical, richer-than-thou type dealers want to leave early from shows, I don't think that they should seek sympathy from the public. Rather, it would be better to simply say, "I am very sorry, but we have to leave early". Who wants to hear all of the exuses?

And another thing: doesn't a dealer have an ethical obligation to serve the public? That means doing things such as answering questions for beginning collectors and non-collectors, even if you know that they are not going to buy or sell with you. This is true for all dealers, but especially if you are a member of the PNG. In fact, it's the #1 rule in the PNG's Code of Ethics:

To furnish advice to my non-professional customers on numismatic matters to the best of my ability.

So, if a PNG dealer is ignoring the public because they are viewed as "tire kickers", then isn't that a blatant violation of the PNG Code of Ethics?

Whatever that obligation is, I doubt that it carries over to having to attend or stay at shows.

Okay. Sure, but doesn't the Code of Ethics suggest that a PNG dealer should not shun or ignore a person who is looking at their coins, just because they are perceived as a "tire kicker"?

BTW, I have left shows early due to travel arrangements. image

There are plenty of ways to interpret the code of ethics. Similar to any other business, all dealers have the right to refuse service to anybody. Who a dealer will conduct business with is entirely their choice. I would also estimate that at least one in three PNG members deal only with other dealers exclusively.

If the PNG expelled members for leaving a show early then there would not be a single member left in the PNG, not even Julian.

No a dealer has the obligation to make money. Every dealer I know makes 80%-90% of their sales the 1st couple days, selling to other dealers. To the biggie dealers, us lowly collectors are necessary evil! The local dealers are there for the whole show because they want the exposure and the local business.

Most of the big dealers really don't care about the tire kickers, they want the cash NOW!!!

Of coarse dealers can chose to not do business if they want. The real unethical people aren't dealers--it's the Show sponsers who charge money to enter when half the dealers are gone!!!image

I'll be there Thursday only. Because I don't want to offend anyone, I'm not taking a table and I'm leaving my coins home. Too bad for the collectors who will be there on Thursday, they might have found something useful in my inventory.
