769 Gram (25 OzT) Gold Nugget w/ Gold Coin Photos -- Gold Nugget Rarity Chart & Background Info

StuartStuart Posts: 9,831 ✭✭✭✭✭
I am pleased to share the first digital photos of my Gold Nugget which I purchased this several years ago while in Perth Australia, back when gold was selling for under $300 per ounce.

According to the Perth Mint (largest seller of gold nuggets in the world) gold nuggets this size are rare with fewer than 20,000 estimated to exist worldwide (rare for gold nuggets). I actually purchased this one from the display window of a jewelry store on Hay Street.

I have added a few gold coins for scale to keep it barely on topic... image

  • That`s one big nugget! image

If you`re ever in Las Vegas, go to the casino " Golden Nugget " on Fremont Street ( across the street from Binnions Horseshoe ). They have a nugget that`s the largest nugget privately owned weighting in at 26+ Troy Pounds! It was found in all places in somebodys backyard about a foot in the ground in Australia. It`s off the main casino in a labyrinth of halls.

Fountainheadgold: You have a sharp eye, but gold nuggets are graded differently than gold coins!! image It does have a bit of rub, but is actually quite angular for a gold nugget.

I think that it originally came from one of the Australian Gold Fields, from a dry desert environment, which is why is is more angular and not water worn & rounded.

66TBird: Here are 3 interesting links to the Perth Mint, Australia web site which contains a lot of fascinating information about Gold Nuggets for mineral collectors and potential purchasers of them.

The third link has many drop-down selectable menus with additional background info for those who want to drill deeper into this...

Nice nugget! How exactly big is that nugget? Can it barely fit into your hand?

    Looks like a giant meteor.

And I want to know how much it costs, :cringes at the thought:.

I was pleasantly surprised to see this old thread back up to the top of the U.S. Coin Forum!! image

<< Stuart - what is it's rarity / collector value beyond its gold content? >>

JDelage: In reply to your above question, according to the informative Perth Mint web site Perth Mint Gold Nugget Rarity, they estimate that there are approximately 20,000 gold nuggets in this size catagory and larger existent in the world. If so, that would make this a rather rare item, not even taking into account it's intrinsic gold bullion value.

GoldCoinLover: Market value for gold nuggets is typically 2x-3x the gold bullion value, but for large rare (museum piece type) gold nuggets the market is similar to that for some of the rarer coins -- whatever the buyer and seller agree upon.

<< How exactly big is that nugget? >>

The gold coins and the ruler were included in the photos for scale, to show you the exact size of the nugget.

Wow... 2X - 3X the bullion value as a starting point is a big chunk of change.

Seeing this thread reappear, caused me to Google the following Gold Nugget Rarity Chart which states that Gold Nuggets of this size (25+ Troy Ounces) are even more rare than I had remembered, estimating that fewer than 700 exist.

Another interesting article entitled Rarity of Natural Gold Nuggets is also located on that same web site.

With Gold now trading at $1021 an ounce, I thought that it might be a good time to dust off this thread of my Pet Rock that was originally posted in 2004.

Here 2 interesting links to a Gold Nugget Rarity Chart, and article for those who are interested in learning more abou their ralative scarcity in nature.

Not as big as yours (mine is merely an 18.54 Gram nugget). It is still beautiful to look at though. I bought mine when gold was in the high $500.00s.
