Saw this coin on ebay last night and I thought I would post it here to see what you knew about it. According to the owner it is an inverted mintmark and there are only 6 known. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

Interesting. The mintmark actually does look inverted. I've never heard of this, though, and there's nothing in Wiles' book about it.

I saw that auction too. The mintmark definitely does look upside-down. I recall a few years back someone wrote up an article for ErrorScope listing the known inverted-S mintmarks (it might even have been Bill Fivaz), maybe someone with an organized set of back-issues can look it up for you there.

It's unfortunate that the coin is not still in mint packaging. With five known...I wouldn't risk my money on a raw one.

I've been looking for this one for years. Numismatic News ran a story on this about
eight or ten years ago but at that time all known examples (6) belonged to the same
guy (out east) who got them in a mint package.

When someone uses a pretty rare coin for their first ebay listing and the total feedback is only 20, I pass.

It's "rare" now mainly because no one has been looking for it. The 1914/3 Bufalo nickels were "rare" when they wre first discovered but look at how many there are now.

That said, I've read John Wexler say that proof dies from the 1960s would only strike in the neighborhood of 3,000 to 5,000 coins before wearing out and being retired. Since mintmarks were punched on the individual dies by hand, it is conceivable that only 3,000 or so examples of this variety were ever minted, which would make it legitimately scarce.

I'd bet it's scarcer than this. I've looked at around 500 sets in the last eight years and
haven't seen one. No doubt a few thousand sets were checked when they ran the story
and there were no reports of more. I'd bet there are fewer than 1,000 in existence.

I have become a bit cynical sice hanging around here with regards to ebay auctions...

Did anyone else notice that the article posted on pcgs.com offers images if you email the author? I wonder if one of those images just happens to be the auction image....

Really cynical, I know. I don't actually think it's true - but I wouldn't be suprised.

I beleive I heard of it before but I don't think it was this coin.
