Need Some Help Please?

This is hard to explain, but it seems, or so I'm told, that occassionally AOWell will block someone from a different domain from sending email to an aol recipient. That's what I've been told anyway. (Sounds fishy, huh?) If someone uses aol, would you put me on your safe list. Do not email me personally,(safety and all that), post back so I can try it out. I'll let you know, and thanks for the assistance.

AOL does have a reputation for blocking domains that it suspects may be sources of spam. The problem is that sometimes they can get too aggressive and sometimes simply having a email that has multiple receipiants can result in the email being bounced as spam. I am on several email lists that are constantly having problems getting through to AOL subscribers.
  • Condor, you've given me an idea. Let me try individual emails, and see what happens. Thanks.

If you have the error code for the returned mail, here is AOL's postmaster error log.

    AOL Postmaster Errors

You're not alone - between our 3 mail servers at work, AOL doesn't like one of them at least once a week.

EDIT: Still can't spell without coffee

  • Hey Strikout, thanks for the info. I have bookmarked it for future referance. However, I am not getting error messages. I just get notices my mail is not being delivered. I can understand the spam ban, however, why ban a whole domain? With technology the way it is, and advanced as it is, they can do better than that. I am trying to go about it in an easier fashion. I asked an aol friend to unblock me today. This may take a while, as he's pretty busy, and doesn't get the chance to do much on his own 'puter. I'll keep you posted if it works.

  • Tell your friends on AOL to check their Spam folder for your mail. They should check every 3 days or so. Even ANA mail gets trapped by AOL spam filters from time to time as I understand. Hope that helps.

    i work at an isp.

AOL asks all large ISPS and domain owners to call them
and get whitelisted if too much email was sent once
upon a time from their mail server.
once done, mail is delivered quite normally.

are you sending email through your ISP's mail server?
can you call them and ask them if they are whitelisted
at AOL? because they should be, it is very simple.

otherwise, AOL does a lot of stuff to stop spam that normal
people do not consider. like refusing the first attempt to
send them email, knowing spammers will not queue and
try again later like a standard mail server does.

also, if you are getting a bounce message, post it here
and we can determine the true error.
  • Here's the notice I get.

This is an automatically generated Delivery Status Notification.

Delivery to the following recipients failed.

What follows is the body of the email. This one was a test to see if a single recipient could get my mail.

As far as my isp being whitelisted, I'd bet MSN isn't whitelisted anywhere, except someplace owned by MSN. I'll try and call them today and find out though.

  • Every once in a while AOL rejects mail from me. Sometimes it is because my ISP gets blocked. Many times it is because of AOLs shotgun approach to dealing with spam. Yesterday it was for a different, unknown reason.

I have never liked AOL. As an early developer of Internet software I've always found AOL to be very commercial and crass. I always suggest that my friends get a different provider. People don't like to change though so most AOL users don't follow my advice.

AOL and Hotmail have not gotten along for quite some time. I think the last thing I read was AOL doesn't accept Hotmail at all, if you were seeing the headers, you would more than likely get this error back from AOL:

    Error 554 HTM:B2
    http://postmaster.info.aol.com/errors/554htmb2.html
    EXPLANATION:
You are using a Hotmail account. The sender or content of the email you are sending has generated a high level of AOL member complaints.
    SOLUTION:
We can no longer accept this email. Please contact hotmail for further assistance

The last time we had a problem with AOL it was because they weren't accepting e-mail with a weblink in it (We had one in our disclaimer footers to our school homepage). They change their rules so much it's hard to keep up with them all.

  • You may have something there, strikout. I do have a web link in my sig line. Let me remove that, and try contacting hotmail again. (By the way, they still haven't answered my emails about this.) I have found out that contacting AOWELL is not easy.

  • The removal of the weblink seems to have worked. Nothing has bounced back so far. Thanks for the help. This forum has alot of knowledge, about alot of different things. Glad I interupted the coin talk and asked here.
