eBay = "Flea"Bay = and why the whole thing sucks!

dorancoinsdorancoins Posts: 2,095 ✭✭✭
I am not happy with "flea"Bay. While this is the forum for U.S. coins, I have been trying to sell some foreign currency - very nice stuff - and price them below catalog to sell. Either its my imagination or "flea"Bay is overrunned with tightwads and those who are expecting something for nothing. I was wondering if anyone on this forum had this situation happen? I just had 12 beautiful, modern world notes end with no bid, and it cost me around $14.00 - has this happen with coins as well, and how many people would like to tell "flea"Bay where to go? And also, how many of you who are using "flea"Bay would like to find the names of those who are watching your items yet don't have the courtesy of placing a bid?

Some people who watch auctions, myself included, watch to see prices realized...no intention of ever bidding. Also, some items don't appeal to a wide market, so one can't assume that quality is the only necessary component to high realized prices (supply and demand come into play). And you are right, people buy from ebay to save money. People seek an "efficient" market and ebay is a means to that end.

Given a chance, most people will try to negotiate a lower price or "lowball" in their offers. Human nature.

It has happened to another collector I know of . Top end examples but no bids . image

I have heard of some people getting away from "flea"Bay for a lot of reasons. Some have had better luck selling directly online. I almost got out of numismatics because of "flea"Bay and the stupidity behind it (which is still evident). I have 25 items on "flea"Bay right now - 2 wooden flats, 2 MPC's, 2 Dutch Auctions, and 21 neat world banknotes - if no one buys them, then the writing is on the wall!image

Not only is it human nature, it's what a free market is all about.

eBay has over 180 million registered users.

If your product didn't sell at the price you expected, you expected too much. There is no market except the market.

Items sell on eBay for what they're worth. No one's eager to give their money away. Seems to me there's not much interest in the items you're selling. Post a 1909-S VDB penny, and you'll get bids.

Its an AUCTION site! Start it at 1 cent and see what happens.

As for watching. I watch dozen of items without bidding, to see what I can expect to either sell a similar item at, or to see what I might expect to pay if I were buying.

Yes this is partly true, what is also true is that many honest legit sellers auctions can/are hurt by the huge number of scammers. One other big factor is what your selling, I do not buy or follow foreign currency or currency at large for that matter, so I don't know how well currency sells overall on the bay.

I think that you don't get bids because most of the people in the foreign currency hobby know that you like to list your items while nude. The lack of bids is for health/sanitary reasons, I am guessing.

i always thought ebay was an auction site.
i was very disappointed to see it turn into a store
where people automagically expect to make a profit
    on every transaction.

put it at 99 cents no reserve. yea it may only go for
a few bucks. but that is all it is worth i guess.

who says it was worth that much anyway? a price guide?

    Yes, that is it.

That and the foreign currency market is thin... So thin you can see through it.

    Niche market?
    Priced too high (reality check)?
Not understanding the real ins and outs of ebay?
Unable to use the real name EBAY and instead try to hurt it by calling it names? (never did understand why people have to say "fleabay"...with all the money Meg makes, I doubt she cares either.
    Difference of opinion?

If ebay doesn't work for you, and you are unable/unwilling to try to make it work, then don't grouse about it, just move on.
Don't you have your own shop? Wouldn't those world notes sell there? If not, why not? Not enough people looking?
Did you have your auctions set for US only or anywhere in the world?

Maybe you think they are really nice and worth a lot....but, maybe the market is thinking otherwise. Why blame people on that?
Maybe you priced them too high. If you priced them at $100 but the most anyone who saw them was willing to bid was $95, then maybe you are overpriced?

Neat thing about starting at $0.99 or something is that it gives the market a chance to dictate the value and, if you would have accepted the $95 but started at $100, you won't get the sale that you would here.

Ebay has done alright by me. Lost a couple dollars on only 1 item I sold. All the rest made me money. I don't sell a lot though. Mainly buy. But, I don't see a need to call it "flea"bay.

I've been told I tolerate fools poorly...that may explain things if I have a problem with you. Current ebay items - Nothing at the moment

doran I have had 180 items recently listed and all sold most for decent prices, perhaps and I am just guessing the issue is listing or discription or pictures or not a popular item, most world coins and stamps fair poorly on ebay due to demand I would research what your items have sold for in the recent past and try some one cent starts just to see what happens.

My business is home-based, by the way, but as far as "flea"Bay is concerned, the stuff that I have right now will more than likely flop - I wouldn't be the least bit surprised. Lesson here - if you want things done right, do it yourself!

It's like a crap shoot. If people find a seller they've come to know and trust they will bid on everything he throws out there.

I was watching an auction last night and was in utter disbelief at the fact that a semi key date Washington Quarter (a PCGS 65 1934-D), a $1000 coin or more depending on quality, was at $450 with a minute left to go in the auction.

The seller must have been going thru some severe freaking out.

Long story short, I watched the coin go up over $600 more in the last 3 seconds. All the people with snipers are making a lot of sellers really nervous especially when an expensive coin is in the mix. image

For myself I had an auction with moderate start price,no one bid. New auction same stuff ,start price .99 material sold for way more than I thought it would. The fees for a .99 cent auction way less than my start price auction. Yes for awhile I thought I was going to lose on my coins ,yet the end results where worth the stress.

If you don't mind waiting a little longer for things to sell, the appropriate BST board is a great place to put items up for sale.

Any chance that the catalog value is in lala land? There are a lot of items out there that trade regularly for well less than their "catalog" value.
