Figuring out copper cents...check my math
Well, with the price of copper, I wondered just how many cents were in a pound of copper anyway. And as my internet searching skills seem to be on the low side....
A Memorial cent made from 1959-1981 weighs 3.11 grams
95% of that is copper
so there is 2.9545g of copper in each cent
28.3495231g is 1 oz.
453.5923696g in 1lb.
So, 153.52593 cents in a pound of copper.
So I call it 154 cent pieces for 1 lb. of copper.
Am I correct?

<< <i>Is the price of copper per pound calculated in Troy or AVDP? A Troy ounce has 31.1 grams. >>
Copper is measured AVDP.
<< <i>There must be some point where cents are going to make a serious retreat from our circulating coins. >>
Well, copper ones at least. I think that has already happened -- I rarely get copper cents in change anymore; it's all Zincolns.
Copper usually sells by the metric ton (~2,200lb) but the price is quoted in Lb (av).
1946-2006 Nickel $0.05 ....................................$0.05330
Copper $3.4771/lb

<< <i>Each pre-1982 cent contains 2.2 cents worth of copper. >>
I expect great fortunes will be made in the copper Lincoln cent trade.

With zinc @ $1.5304 a zinc cent is:.......................$0.0084
typical mixture of 20% copper cents is:................$0.0113 (cents can be melted without separation at a profit)
<< <i>so if I pick up $1000000 worth of copper cents I can sell them as scrap and have 2.2 million dollars? >>
I'd like to see that picture!
I'd give you the world, just because...
Speak to me of loved ones, favorite places and things, loves lost and gained, tears shed for joy and sorrow, of when I see the sparkle in your eye ...
and the blackness when the dream dies, of lovers, fools, adventurers and kings while I sip my wine and contemplate the Chi.

I would go crazy sorting out the Zincolns.(Man, I like that term
<< <i>so if I pick up $1000000 worth of copper cents I can sell them as scrap and have 2.2 million dollars? >>
No, because the scrap dealers and the smelter will each need to make something on the deal as well, plus the refining costs. You'd probably get 1.9 to 2 million.
<< <i>Just for giggles, let's say you had a 5 gallon bucket of copper lincolns. You took it to the local scrap yard. Do you think they would take it? >>
Yes .........they would put it on their scale and pay you for scrap copper price for the day.

<< <i>Dang...I doubt I could even lift a 5 gallon bucket of copper cents. lol >>
You probably can't. The bucket handle couldn't support it and you would have to bear hug it. It would weigh around 163 pounds. If it was already up on a table you could possibly do it but to lift it from the floor would be questionable.
