A friend of mine has been building a 20th century PCGS graded type set in MS65 all coins are blazing white, all the copper is blazing red. He has been working on this set for years. All the coins are the key date for the various series. He has completed his set sans the Ike and the SBA 1$. He asked me to find out which Ike dollar and SBA would be the scacest in blast white PCGS MS65.
Mucho thanks for any help or whom I could PM to find this out.

For the SBA he'll be wanting either an 1981-S for a non-specific variety or a 1979-P Wide Rim for a specific variety. Information on the wide rim variety can be found here.

<< <i>Well, for the IKE's, the 1972 Type 2 in 65 has the lowest PCGS Pop counts so I guess that would be the scarcest/key for that series. Actually, anything for 1972 would fit the scarecest/key definition with the exception of the 72-D. Type 1, 2, or 3 determination can be located here. Next up would be either the 1971 or the 1976 Type 1 in MS65.

the 81 clear s SBA proof books higher in the red book and for all intents would be a "scarcer" albeit, UGLY coin. IMO. Sorry, this coin is just hideous.
1972 P IKE
1981-S SBA
And no, the 1981-S is not a proof, its a business strike that was only available in the mint sets.

<< <i>Then the 1981-S SBA and a 1972 IKE. EOS!

Red Book has i as a PF-65, but hey, its the red book and we all know how accurate that can be

The 1980-S in MS65 can be had, with patience, for around $20 but it will increase in value sharply as Full Talons catches on.
The Wide Rim in 65 is around $100 and the 81-S around $125.
If your friend does not want to get involved in the three different 1972 Ikes - and like the Wide Rim, these are fully integrated into the series - then he should go for either the 1973 or 1974 in MS65 as these have the original reverse design but with a higher profile than the 1971 and thus more attractive. These are readily available in the $50 - 100 range.
And/or he could consider the 1976 Type 1 in MS65 as this year had the Liberty Bell/moon reverse instead of the eagle landing reverse. Cost will run around $200.
"Blast white" is not a big issue for any of these modern nickel dollars but your friend should be aware that some such have been dipped prior to encapsulation: if not dipped and rinsed well, they have a tendency to develope unattractive toning with age.

The '81-S type II proof does sell for a higher price sometimes but it is actually a more common
coin and the price is a reflection of much higher demand. It is estimated that more than half a
million of these were made.
71-P, 72-P, 76-P Type 1 are all good candidates for "regular" Ikes.
For Ike Varieties,...71-S Peg-Leg DDO-007, 72-P Type 1 or 2, 71-D and 74-D Peg-Legs.
