Found 1917 cent in rolls from Bank

I got bored yesterday and swapped some 2005 rolls for cents brought in by bank customers. I went thru $10 worth of cents and found a good deal of older dates from the 1960's, but the highlight was the 1917 I pulled out.

Can anyone tell me how to identify if its the doubled die or not?

As you can imagine, its fairly worn from being a circulation piece. Here are a few images...sorry they are not more detailed.

This is really a pics first, story later kind of place. Can't answer your questions without the image, blurry or not.

The doubling on the letters of TRUST is about 1/2 again the width of the regular letters, and there is a definite split on the 9 upper end, and the horizontal on the 7 is quite thick. Do you have a Cherrypickers' Guide to Rare Die Varieties? Best images are there.

Maybe this picture will suffice, a photographer I am NOT!

When the coins are as worn as this one, its hard to tell if dates and other markers are doubled. No sense letting apotentially valuable coin go unchecked if its worth something.

No Cherrypickers guide here, been meaning to buy it. I also wanted the 2nd edition if they ever get it in print.

Yeah, that was a nice find. By the way, your pics are good, easy to see whether it's the ddo or not. Even good-4 or 8 examples of ddo-1 (CONECA 1-O-V), fs-013, show the split on the 9, it's that pronounced. Yours does not have that, nor are the numbers of the date thick.

If you're into varieties, you won't be able to put Cherrypickers' down. Volume 2 of the 4th edition may never come out, so go ahead and get volume 1 at least. I still use my 3rd edition a lot, and that has all denominations.

    Thanks, Buddygray!

JRocco: I still don't know where to start with a description. It's a lot of coins--even with my having sold nearly all the dated rolls almost immediately. What I've found is probably mostly widgets--if I understand the technical, numismatic use of the term. image

What's nice about having this many coins to get a handle on is that I can't remember from day to day (much less from week to week) what I've found. Thus, I've re-discovered a bunch of nice coins several times, which delights me each time I run across the things I'd previously found and forgotten about.

My current project is to check for DDOs about 1,000 1936s with a 17x loop. I have to admit that I'm slow getting to the task. I tried looking at a few dozen of them, and it's pretty tedious. Maybe if I found a good example early it'd provide some motivation. It's more fun to go back and look at some of the nicer teens and toners (and to watch my daughters try to hoist a canvas bag containing 5,000 unsorted 1920s).

I've promised myself NOT to make any lists until after I've decided what I'll keep (and then spend my time making a list of only those coins that I'll hang onto). As I find "batches" that I can bear to part with, I'll offer them on E-Bay or the B/S/T Forum. Problem is, I'm already kicking myself for having sold the dated rolls.

Even on horrible examples, the last "T" in TRUST" is obvious...To me that is one of the easiest markers...
