Question: Have any of you changed your eBay ID before?

In other words maybe as a buyer you thought your ID was becoming too familiar.
When I last researched this the rule was that if you do, then all previous feedback
is wiped out and you start over. But is that really important since few people I think
read past a page of feedbacks. Anybody change them once in a while?

NO your feedback does not start over; you just generate an ID history.

Feedback isn't wiped out if your change your ID, only if you create a new ID.

I changed my ID once. Feedback stays the same; you get a little pair of sunglasses to wear for 30 days indicating to others that you changed it.

  • I tend to be wary if the seller has too many ID changes. That's a red flag.

No, but I had multiple accounts once back when things were a little more dodgy.

I have never changed my id since I started 6 or 7 years ago. I was considering changing it to match the name I use in other places including these forums. I have debated this one for the last year or so.

I don't have any issues if someone wants to change thier id because feedback stays the same. I do have issues if someone keeps starting over to get rid of negative feedback.

going on eight years with the original ID. I have been tempted to change it in the past. When other ebayers see a familiar name bidding on a particular item it may draw in additional interest. IMO.

I changed an ID a while back. I thought it gave to much information.

When making an ID, stay away from forms of your First name, Last name, street address, street number, etc.

    make it kind of generic.

After 9.5 years, I changed mine. I've been Rob9874 since Sept 1996 (my birthday is 9/8/74). It's a unique number to me, and I use it for my email, cell phone, etc (no not any passwords!). But when I searched my name on eBay, I noticed there's a Rob9875, Rob9745, Rob9876, etc....I realized how non-unique it is. So I changed it to VintageBatman, something more unique, and representative of my interests (yes, I collect old Batman stuff). I don't think I lose many bids over it. People still see my feedback, and that I joined in 1996.

No, I've always had the same ID. It only caused a problem one time. I got an e-mail saying that someone had asked for my contact info and then one from from a guy wanting to know when I was going to pay for the an auction I won. I checked the auction and it had been won by Condor101 not Conder101. So I decided to get contact information on him. Much to my surprise it turned out that we not only had nearly the same eBay ID, but the same name, differing by just one letter, as well. Shortly thereafter he was NARUed.

I also get a little nervous about sellers who have "private" feedback, even if it's 99-100% positive. I always wonder WHY they don't want anyone to see what buyers actually said about them! image

  • Thank you everybody, you have convinced me I am not changing.
This has been something I have pondered but no more. Now back to coins.

A very long time ago, a lot of people used their email address as their ID, including me. That was in the days before spammers took over the internet. I had to shorten it when spam started to become a problem.
  • No but I did get bored with my old JCraton account and started my Error-Coins account.
I created the error-coins account and was going to use it only for the selling of error coins. After the sacagawea/mule fiasco, the mint stepped up their quality controll and error coins have skyrocketed beyond my finacial means so I sell what ever I have to sell on my error-coins account and have abbandoned my jcraton account.

I used to have a name based account, but when I started buying and selling more, I decided to go to something more neutral !

Anyone may have as many IDs as they have email addresses.

Personally, I don't and never did ... STILL DON'T like the fact that on eBay everybody can see one everybody else's dealings. (what they are bidding on, what they won, how much they paid and all that jazz) That is one reason for having a couple of aliases that no one, except maybe a few people that you really trust, is aware of, particularly when it comes to buying.

As for selling and having more than one seller's ID I can think of One GOOD reason right off the top of my head. It's called a Divorce and not wanting your ex or her lawyer seeing everything you sell and having her hand out when it comes time to settle the Community Property. image

i changed my username on ebay.
as a buyer i did not care what it was. my money was good.
as a seller, i have to give up the care free name i had.

buyers can see the history of my name change, but
100% pos feedback goes a long way of them not caring
    about it.
