Neat "junk" silver find.........

Thumbing thru the recent "junk" silver turn up this little oddity !!!!!

Notice the excellent Blakesly effect at the date, and as a bonus, a planchet lamination on the neck.

Not "new car money", but cool anyways !!!! image

    Blakesly effect - An interesting feature on many coins of this error type is something called the 'Blakesly Effect.' This is named after the gentleman who first described the feature and is recognized by a weakness in the rim directly opposite from the clip. The weakness is caused by the mechanical process of turning a 'blank' into a 'planchet' that is ready for striking into a coin. A blank is the round disk of metal that has been punched from coinage strip. The blank is then processed into a planchet by annealing the blank and then running the blanks through a machine that puts a rim on the disk of metal. This is done by forcing the blanks through an area slightly smaller than the diameter of the blank. The weakness in the rim directly opposite from the clip is due to the machine not being able to exert pressure on the blank in the area where the clip exists. The lack of pressure in the area of the clip results in low pressure opposite from the clip and less of a rim being formed.

    The "uspet mill" is what is used to put the rim on the planchet.

    I'm going to have to ONE UP you. Though it's not my find, I sold it for the finder. Many years ago he purchased a junk bag of silver and found this quarter struck on nickel planchet in the mix!
