Are 1st day coin covers worth $20 ?

I was thinking of picking up a couple of the Nebraska ones as a keepsake for the kids but the thought of $20 for a quarter, a stamp and a envelope is hard to take.

Any one collect these? Do they keep their value or is it what you see is what you get?

I don't know how much interest there is in these. First Day covers in general seem to have fallen out of favor badly over the past 15 years or so. I'd spend my money on something else. They probably aren't going to have "legs."

Ditto....I made the mistake of buying some from the mint, then got some aftermarket on ebay (still sealed) for 1/2 the price.
There may be a couple that end up worth issue price or more (new nickels, sacagawea) but not most of them image
Kind of like the dies.....neat little piece IF they had left some vestige of the design on it rather than totally blasting it clean.

If you got it as a keepsake, and neat little thing, then count the $20 as gambling funds (I did that with the mercury dime I grabbed the other day).

I've been told I tolerate fools poorly...that may explain things if I have a problem with you. Current ebay items - Nothing at the moment

I started collecting them as they started to be released from the Mint. Then, I sold all of them when the DE First Day Covers (and a few others) were fetching $110/each on eBay. Now look at them. image

I think it's a cool thing for youngsters to collect for COLLECTING purposes...certainly not for INVESTING purposes! I can't imagine Sam going without one of these things...after all he has been thru with the NE state quarter! image

You're right aobut that. He's the prod in all this (his grandfather has a farm a few miles away from Chimney Rock) BUT I imagine quite a few Nebraska dealers/collectors will be buying these and a year or so from now they will be wanting to lighten their inventory load and these covers will be showing up regularly at local shows, etc. which may prove to be the better time to buy. image

They had about 15 minutes of fame when the first few states finally sold out from the Mint. A few of the sold out states jumped to over $100 on Fleabay for a very short period of time and then they all fell into the status of widgets and have never recovered. IMO Silver Proof Sets make a better keepsake for the kids, especially if you want the keepsake to hold its value. One or two of the Silver Mint sets might actually take off for you with a smidgen of luck!
