The nickel is worth more than 5c already.

Copper is on a parabolic increase. Nickel has been lagging but has now gotten
off the dime. The nickel has more than five cents worth of metal at today's prices!

Unlike silver which needs to be refined, nickels can simply be recycled as an alloy
in many different steels.

At current zinc prices it may not even be necessary to separate zinc and copper
pennies. Just melt them all down and skim off the zinc. There is very little loss on
the zinc cents now.

A 21st century TRADE DOLLAR FIASCO! I like it!

Perhaps if the government did nothing but coin nickels for us to rape them on, they would do far less harm and the benefit would flow to AMERICANS.

Ooops, I just found the flaw, didn't I?

    fergit it.

I kin see it now. WalMart ads from 2012. "Get an extra 90% off all purchases if paying with metal money."

But here's the catch-22. Does the amount of energy needed to melt the nickels into a molten state and recycle them cost less than the amount of money over 5-cents the nickels are worth? If the nickel is worth 5.05 cents and it costs you .25 cents per nickel to recycle them, then you're actually losing money by melting your nickels. image
I collect the elements on the periodic table, and some coins. I have a complete Roosevelt set, and am putting together a set of coins from 1880.

It certainly won't pay to make cu/ ni alloy out of nickels at the current time for exactly this reason.
However industrial processes don't need cu/ ni alloy, they merely need the cu and the ni. They have
to heat it to the same temperature whether they are using pure copper and pure nickel or a compar-
able weight in nickels. In fact, small scrap like nickels are easier to melt and make far superior "chill
scrap". This is small amounts of metal or alloy that is used to fine tune the temperature and compo-
sition of a "heat". Industry has been using vast quantities of new coins for decades to make all our
modern conveniences. Most of these are melted abroad because no US coin has suffered this fate in
the past. There are substantial quantities of foreign coins imported here for alloy though.

Collectors are only now catching on that these high mintages of the last half century have little bearing
on the number of coins available or the condition of the coins that are available.

    I listen to your voice like it was music, [ y o u ' r e ] the song I want to know.

    image

I'd give you the world, just because...

Speak to me of loved ones, favorite places and things, loves lost and gained, tears shed for joy and sorrow, of when I see the sparkle in your eye ...
and the blackness when the dream dies, of lovers, fools, adventurers and kings while I sip my wine and contemplate the Chi.
