Safe Deposit Boxes...

MrEurekaMrEureka Posts: 24,811 ✭✭✭✭✭
How many slabs do you keep in your safe deposit boxes?

Do you keep the slabs loose in the SD box, in 20-coin slab boxes, or what?

I'm wondering if there's a market for a better storage method.

The 5" wide ones fit 2 slabs across nicely so just stack up the slabs in those.

100+ slabs in the SD box, most are in PCGS/NGC 20 coin boxes. The ANACS ones are loose and bound together in little groups with rubber bands and fit in the different areas of the SD box.

Its coming close to a point where either I have to get another SD box, or remove the PCGS/NGC boxes to squeeze more in. A better storage method would be nice, the PCGS/NGC boxes waste space.

All of my slabbed coins are in safety deposit boxes at my bank in the 20-coin boxes.

I only work about 5 minutes away from where I bank, so we get to visit often.

Not as much fun that way but a lot safer.

I have several boxes at several banks.
I use Intercept Shield 20 piece track boxes. (Used to use the 10 piece double boxes, but they take too much room).
I also include a tin of silica gel to keep the humidity down (only needs recharging once a year).

I don't remember how many fit, but if I stand PCGS slabs on edge longways, they just fit in the box, and I put them all in that way. I fill up the unused space with a few plastic grocery bags in to keep things from sliding around (they are very compressible.).

New collectors, please educate yourself before spending money on coins; there are people who believe that using numismatic knowledge to rip the naïve is what this hobby is all about.

You do not want to have rubber bands

in a safty deposit box with coins as the bands

contain sulfur which over time may volatize.

I have the largest box available. It fits six PCGS storage boxes with room for other slabs stuck around the sides. I just put the NGC coins in the PCGS boxes eventhough the cover doesn't fit snuggly.

I had to wait a few years for the larger size SD box to be available at my local bank. It holds 6 PCGS boxes on their side. NGC boxes won't fit.

I have a large SDB which currently holds about 15+ PCGS boxes. Plus I have several differant size capitol plastic boards in a flat box I think that is 9 X 11.

    i am with kranky.

slide them in, use grocery bags to make them tight.
24+ slabs can fit in their smallest box.

oh, all the coins are gold, so i do not worry about toning.

I have a 5" x 5" box by whatever the length is. Holds just over 100 slabs.
Lots of safekeeping for about $50 a year, bank is open 7 days a week.

The PCGS/NGC boxes take up way too much room. A lot of mine are just stacked together and crunched in. Since I don't access them more than a few times per year it works ok. The prime pieces I keep in PCGS boxes of 20. But you can only fit 2 of those in a 5x5.

I have close to 200 slabbed PCGS coins in my SD boxes. I feel that they are much safer there and besides, I can't afford the insurance to keep them at home.

As another member stated, my bank is close enough to visit if I need to.

Here is a link to the silica gel I use in my SD box. Probably available elsewhere, but they are not expensive.
I use the 40 gram size.

My bank just has small boxes so I just stack them inside the box. Somewhere around 10-15 slabs, a couple of lose coins in flips, a couple coins in govt holders from the mint, ASE rolls, and some silver bullion. Overall it makes a nice fit.

I asked the question "where to store valuable coins?" at a seminar recently.

The speaker is well respected and responded that without a doubt you want to keep your coins in a safe deposit box.
