Is there 2 diferent dies on the nevada quarter?

Hello everyone. I was just curiousabout 2 different dies on the nevada quarters? I was looking thru a roll i got at the bank, and on the reverse where th first horse is on the left side his hind legs dissapear into the banner on some of them. On other ones his hind leg closer to the coin is bent up and you can see part of the calf higher than the banner.
Has anyone else noticed this?

I can't see how grease filled the die. On all of them it looks like a bent leg. Also noticed something on the horse on the right rear by the sun. His hind legs are different than the other nevada quarters. I can't say what it looks like, There is something there. I'll try to get a picture of that too. I even wrote to coin world and sent them a picture, of the leg. Lets see what they say.

Ok, that's one picture. Now we need a picture of the other variety so we can compare the two. Can't tell if there are two varieties if we only have a picture of one of them.

Will try to post tonight the non-bent leg.

The tail looks a little different than those I've seen as well but this might just
be caused by a good strike. The foreleg may just be a small die chip. A picture
of it may be useful as well, especially if taken from the top of the coin a little more.

You might want to wait for the comparison pic.

    Hello again,
My picture taking skills are not the best. I have noticed that Russ takes some great pictures! Any way to get in touch with him? I'll send him one to take a picture of to clear up everything. Can someone help me get in touch with him? Like I said there are 2 places where they are different than the regular one.

How the heck do you take such great pictures? Yes mine are like that but the calf on the first horse on the left side is very visable by the hind leg. The third horse on the right has wher the knee caps meet up something funny looking, do not know how th describe it!!! Do not want to even attempt to because you people will think this whole thread is a joke. I took a picture of the third horse will post it later because I do not know how. My wife does this stuff usually ( please do not make fun)

Looks like a cud along the top of the banner. You can see the same small portion of the leg on both coins... right at the corner where the left leg of the horse and the banner meet..... but the 'bent' leg coin looks like extra metal like a cud layered along the small portion of the leg. That's what is looks like to me... but close up pictures showing more detail would help decide. I do not believe the extra metal is actually part of the left leg.

Question? Would a cud make 11 of the same quarters in the roll? And also affect a third horse?

Here's the best I could do with the leg detail:

<< <i>Question? Would a cud make 11 of the same quarters in the roll? And also affect a third horse? >>

    Yes.

Most rolls are made up of coins from six or eight pair so there will be one to a dozen or so of each.

A chipped die would affect every coin it struck after it was damaged.

Don't write this one off yet though. That doesn't look like a typical "cud" and the tail is still unexplained.

So that metal is a cud? How many do you think have that difference/defect? The two (and only two) I've had look like that.

I'm gonna guess that this is just a well struck example from a well-hubbed die. Even
on the other specimens I've seen it looks like the artist intended this leg to be bent.
This coupled with the extra detail in the tail might imply that you just have a very well
    struck coin.

I'll keep an eye on these.

I'm not a horse expert, but from what I can see, that doesn't look to be anything intentional. If that was supposed to be part of the horse's rear leg, wouldn't it be "bent" the wrong way? I don't think horses' rear legs bend like that. It looks to be a chip or cud to me, pending better pictures. image

You're correct on the horse's leg anatomy. A horse's back legs wouldn't bend backwards at the location in question. Rather, they would be bent forward, i.e., the next step places a back hoof on the ground under the horses stomach. Even between steps, the back legs come up rather than extend out behind the horse very far.

Die Cracks exist on Obverse @ neck of Wash. Most are on left, and direction is right, toward bottom Obverse right. Some very dramatic. 13 examples so far cataloged, and 3 have similar "knee" flaw. 2 obviously different Dies are represented by the 13 examples. I respectfully request that anyone with die breaks of this piece p.m. pictures to me if not to much trouble, so that I may continue with the cataloging of die breaks. I sincerely appreciate all efforts to do so. Note: also 2 Die Break examples -between "of" and "AMERICA", direction north to south. Possible third Die, but not enough info yet to confirm. Regards and Respectfully, John Curlis
