My son sends his condolences..... He called me up just after I sent you the 2nd pm and said "Dad, you will never guess what I got for you today!!!!" I feigned great surprise and he told me about the coin he sniped.

Looks like you have a nice one that you won today though........

Is there some sort of VAM collection being sold by Heritage in their auction this week? I'm not a VAM guy, but there seems to be alot of the scarcer varieties in that sale.

This VAM business is enough to drive a sane person up a wall. A crack here and a crack there, not the chemical kind, drive otherwise sane men crazy.

I wonder how many people put up raw Morgans on eBay thinking they'll get $10 or $15, and are shocked to find that thay got $50, $100 or more...

So, is a VAM and a die break one and the same. Or are they two totally different things? I'm confused.image

A VAM is a number or alphanumeric assignment to a particular aspect of a coin. This can be doubling, missing letters, die gouges, missing features, die breaks....etc It is based on the acronym of Leroy C. Van Allen and A. George Mallis who had done extensive research into different die that were used to make the silver dollars.

Die breaks are formed when dies are used to the extent where they develop cracks and then actual pieces of the dies start to break off. These breaks and cracks are used as PUP's (pick up points) to distinguish different dies and die states.

Here is a link to a better explanation by Rob Joyce.

    Hope this helps.

VAMs can be pitted reverses, double dies, triple dies, die breaks, die gouges, etc. - some feature which makes the coin type UNIQUE; hence it's
    assigned it's own vam number.

Die Break would be a vam. Got to be a break, not just cracks.

In Morgan dollars you will also see a lot of unique vams based on the date position. Dates digits were hand-punched into the date one by one, so if the mint worker
wasn't careful, you would enter up with crooked dates, dates shifted left, dates shifted right, high or low, etc.

Coins without any unique features are usually assigned as "VAM-1" for that year (called "normal dies", no doubling, no die break, date appears normal, etc.).

OK. I think I understand now. I was looking at a Morgan that had a line running through the lettering on the reverse. I think I was looking at a die crack. The coin I was looking at was an 1899-O with a crack running through the lettering on the reverse from the 7 o'clock to the 11 o'clock. Anybody seen one like this before?
