2 gold bars and some silver coins found off Key West

This is a great time to be finding gold bars. image

The Associated Press

KEY WEST, Fla.
Divers returned to port Monday with two gold bars and 15 silver coins they unearthed, which had been buried beneath the ocean floor for almost 400 years.

The objects are believed to be from the shipwreck of the Nuestra Senora de Atocha, a Spanish galleon that sank off Key West in 1622.

The bars were discovered Sunday by the divers from Mel Fisher's Treasure Salvors on the treasure-hunting ship the Magruder about 35 miles off of Key West. They were found beneath about 12 feet of sand in 20 feet of water.

The first bar found weighed one pound and measured about 7 inches long, while the second weighed two pounds and was 7.25 inches long.

Kim Fisher, the president of the Fisher company, estimated the value of the find to be about $250,000.

Something tells me... they don't sell this stuff by the ounce @ NY spot, so it's a moot point.

Also think it's strange... 20 years later they finally found some more? You'd think by now, there would be a 1 mile wide hole iin the ocean where they found that ship... or was it the fact that they were sued by the state and just left it there so they knew where it was all the time.

The treasure is scattered over a fair sized area and the site is surveyed and treated as an archeological site so with all the surveying and documenting that has to be done, even if nothing is found, greatly slows the recovery and is the reason material is still being found after all these years.

If I recall correctly, they still haven't found the main cargo. The ship was carrying...are you ready for this?...47 (troy) tons of treasure.

Large sand waves can and do shift every hurricane season underwater, similar to the way they do in a desert. After last year's weather, I'm surprised they haven't found more material.

So is the Atocha property of Mel Fisher, or if I stumble upon some Atocha treasure in a sandbar, do I get to keep it?

Mel Fishers group does hold the salvage rights to the wreck site, but I don't know how large an area is specified.
