Do you ship to people with Unverified PayPal Accounts?

moosesrmoosesr Posts: 1,966 ✭✭✭
Someone won my auction who doesn't have a PayPal confirmed shipping address or verified address and I will not be ineligible for PayPal protection against fraudulent chargebacks. The person just started on eBay and has two positive feedbacks in the last week.

Does anyone have any experience or recommendations/comments on the risk on sending the item to this person?

Thanks,
Charlie

I would email the winner and tell them that you only ship to verified PayPal accounts and that you are willing to wait upto five days for them to verify their account with PayPal. When I verified a few years ago, it was done in a day or two, and it shouldn't be a problem for the winner to do it.

  • I dont ship to unconfirmed addresses simply b/c there is no protection. I simply ask them to confirm a shipping address through Paypal or ask if they have another method of payment they wish to use.
  • There is an option at PayPal that you can set to refuse payments by people with unverified accounts. That way they get the message directly from PayPal and you don't have to return payment or anything. I have shipped to people with unverified PayPal accounts after they have written to me with a believable explanation of why they are not verified. Also people in other countries won't have verified accounts and the PayPal option will not block them.
  • In fact I myself was unverified for several years. My shipping address is my PO Box but my credit card had my home address as billing address. Finally I changed the billing address of my card to the PO Box address and got verified.
  • No, Never, Absolutely NOT.

I do, but it I accept it as a risk. A PayPal account can be unverified by a discrepancy as small as leaving out a period in an address or abreviateing a word in one place and not another. I myself had a hard time tracking down why I wasn't "confirmed" address. New users also are not immediately confirmed.

I'll usually ship a $20 item to an unconfirmed address, but not a $500 item.

Just another observation... getting PayPal to honor their "seller protection" guarantee can be difficult as has been demonstrated on threads on this board.

Your best protection IMO is shipping insurance.

Depends on the value of the item, and the feedback the guy has. But in general, no.

All depends on the value of the coin.

If they are unconfirmed, I'm not sure even if they confirm, you'll get the notification that they are confirmed on the auction in question.

There is also one other catch that sellers should know about.

If a buyer pays via paypal to a group of sellers at the same time with an unverified address, PAYPAL WILL accpet the payment even though you have the box checked to not accept payments from unverified buyerrs.

You have to go into your E-Bay preferences and unclick accepting payments from batched buyers payments.

    Good luck and seller beware!!!

I would usually ship to unconfirmed addresses without a problem. If I felt uncomfortable with the feedback or price of the item I might ask for a verified address or additional contact information and believable story why they're not confirmed.

I have a confirmed address but I'll use my unconfirmed address (work) because I can't count on anyone being home when the mail is delivered. At work the secretary will sign for the package and put it in my desk or hold it for me. I usually ask the seller if they'll ship to an unconfirmed address and in most cases they will. I've offered telephone numbers and any other contact information as necessary.

  • I have a long-standing Paypal account with a confirmed address. But I am unverified because I refuse to link my Paypal account to one of my bank accounts. I have read horror stories about Paypal locking your bank account for any number of reasons (such as a buyer paying with a stolen credit card). I just don't trust Paypal and feel it is more than sufficient to be linked to a credit card and to have a confirmed address.

I have 160 'unverified' purchases in my account history, and I have yet to have a seller refuse to complete the deal because I don't have a verified account. If someone demads that I get verified, I will offer them another form of payment -- and if that is not satisfactory, we can agree not to complete the transaction.

The horror stories are mostly overblown, but many people do feel more secure by opening an additional checking account for the sole purpose of linking to PayPal.

I used to, but set my account to only accept transactions from confirmed addresses about a year ago.

I only had one buyer complaint, because now it brings up a PayPal screen asking for your credit card number to confirm the address.

I've never had a chargeback (knock on wood)

Those horror stories are just that, stories. Paypal has NO ability to control your bank account, only your Paypal account. I do completely understand those that dont want to tie their credit card or bank account to their Paypal (my account was hacked and milked for about $500 a couple of weeks ago), but they can not lock your bank account. That would be a breech of trust from your bank to allow them that type of access.

You can use a Savings account. Works the same as checking.
The routing number is always the same for your bank, it's the account number that's different, so if your account number is checking or savings doesn't matter. Just an FYI.

I wont ship to an unverified if they are useing paypal, if they want me to ship to an unverified addy they need to send a money order
  • everything purchased on ebay for me was through an unverified account. i would not want to connect my bank acccount to paypal- ebay already has my credit card info- it is enough to have those two pieces linked. to certify the address is fine. think about it- how serious is eaby about nabbing the senders of phishing attempts? how responsible will they be if/when serious amounts of information are lost or stolen? you would be contacted by mail regarding the breach of private information and told to monitor closely your accounts. the less information on you they have to lose the better.

You guys are mixing up "unconfirmed" with "unverified." I could understand if you would not ship to an unconfirmed person, that means that their ADDRESS has not been confirmed. Unverified means that they don't have a BANK ACCOUNT linked to paypal.

I guess that means I'm both "unconfirmed" and "unverified." I use a PO Box for shipping but my home address for billing, and I don't have a bank account linked to Paypal. I also use Paypal for several transactions each month (both here on the forums and ebay) and haven't had any issues because of my status.
