How much of a discount do ICG graded coins sell at compared to PCGS?

Should a point or two be taken away from the coin or is there a percentage?

Just send it to PCGS first. They'll be happy to take a point or two off for you.

I would say by take of grade points because sometimes one point makes huge different in price.

Also, some coins are graded accurately by ICG.
Lets see what others will say.

I was under the Impression that ICG was good in all grades UNDER MS. Its just their MS graded coins you gotta watch out for! image

It really depends on the series and the grade. Consensus seems to be that circulated coins are accurately graded, while MS and Proof coins are overgraded by a point or two (especially PR/MS 70s).

However,as always, the "buy the coin, not the holder" rule applies.

To give you a good example, the Coin Dealer Newsletter actually lists prices for ICG graded coins of certain series. You can easily compare those values with a similar coin graded by ANACS, NGC, or PCGS.

ICG Has a lot of proof 70 coins out there so any of there modern proofs are discounted in the market place by 50-80% they are often hard to sell even then, Most of there Franklins and mercury dimes in ms65 are really 64's and sell below those levels. The other moderns like the state quarters most of the icg slabs are very cheap. I will say the ICG circulated coins are typicaly right on as well as coins below ms64, also they are very loose with Lincolns there slabs above 64 are often just jokes, I have a ms67 1957 ICG washington Quarter even the seller thought it was a joke, he was happy to take my 13.00 offer which is what I would have paid for a nice ms65 which is what this coin really is. I would not use ICG its a waste if you want to trade or resell go with PCGS- NGC- ANACS They are regarded in the market place as the top tier look at the sales on ebay PCGS Is the dominent player and rightly so in my opinion.

i think half eagles are over graded by one point in AU-MS area.
on ebay they bring almost as good money as pcgs, and often
    equal to NGC.

but sometimes, they are heavily discounted due to bad pics.
no one out there to take a long shot.

I bought a 1965 SMS Kennedy in an ICG MS68CAM holder for $235 recently. The last PCGS MS68CAM to sell brought nearly $2000 in the same auction venue.

For what I collect ICG does a good job grading. There are often bargains in ICG holders.
I collect Capped Bust series by variety in PCGS AU/MS grades.

It's now in a PCGS MS67CAM holder - which is still worth more than I paid.

Nope. Knew it was a 67 as soon as I saw it in-hand. But it has contrast well above baseline for a cameo example, so I wanted it for my set.

Getting a dealer to make you a fair offer on an ICG graded coin is the first mountain of an issue to deal with. What they'll pay is another matter.

In the wholesale circles there is only one major dealer who will place legitimate bids for ICG coins, and the only times the bids will be honored is when the coins are white in appearance.

Look at the market indicator on the (front page of the) grey sheet. I haven't for a while, but it had been about a half of a percent higher for ICG over PCGS, believe it or not, for a long time. I am not sure where they arrived at that as it doesn't seem to meet with my personal observations over many series, though I do generally look at uncirculated coins. ICG does seem to do a really good job on many of the Morgans I have examined and purchased. However, the MS63 to MS65 range is not consistent in my personal opinion, particularly when it comes to toned pieces. My take is buy a coins, as every nboleman of numismatics tells you, based on the coin and not the holder/tag. I put ICG in the same league as PCGS, NGC and ANACS. They all can spot rubs, AT and alterations about the same. Form there, grade the coin yourself and pay what it is worth to you. No great collections as far as I am aware have been built form single sources and always at market bid or ask.
