I use software called NumisExpert. Depending on how much information you want to store and how you want to access it, a simple spreadsheet could be adequate.

I am a buy to keep collector and use my own Excel spreadsheet. It can do anything the commercial software does if you just spend the time to manually update pricing once or twice a year, photograph your coins and include the photos on your spreadsheet. I don't consider it a chore, just part of the enjoyment of owning coins.
