MS64. I'd like to say 65 but the marks on the forehead and cheek preclude doing so.

Nice coin, are you doing a 7070?

It's one of the few Barbers I've ever seen that I actually like. Certainly a lot better than all the dipped out white crap floating around out there.

The coin is not ugly. I love it. As for Russ and his camera work, all I can say is "Awsome". Keep up the good work Russ and keep the photos coming.

kind of looks like a second toning.

Yes, the area around the cap that's light grey with no apparent luster makes me think that as well.

Agree AU-58, looks like a little rub on the high points. I like the toning, but the toning line looks a little odd at the base of the cap.

The coin is a bit too clean (free of ticks, etc) to be an AU 58. I'd call it a MS 62.

( Here we go again, the nuances between an AU 58 and a MS 62 coin ).

Russ, your images have convinced me that the Nikon Coolpix 950 is the way to go; as everyone before me has said, your images are terrific.

And from what holder was the 1904 $20 cracked? image

That could be the "Accented Cap" variety.

Isn't it amazing how what "would have been" a cherished and admired STAR of a type set can be a "get it OUT of there" if it happens to get a 62 printed on a piece of paper?

Nice photo--Looks to have been perhaps in one of those brown paper 2 X 2 holders of the 1950's and to have picked up some cabnet friction (not circulation) prior to that. Although for the time being PCGS might call it "questionable color", I agree with the MS-62 using todays standards (or last years actually). Good coin.image

I thought as much. Images don't truly convey the true grade of a coin most of the time. I can see where alot of us thought it was an AU 58; there were no "tell tale" signs of actual use on this coin.

I'm sort of surprised noone brought up the old AT / NT discussion as well.

Nice coin, Russ. ( Also glad to see you are not just fixated with AH Kennedys )

That mark below the eye looks like a tear. Wish Barber had designed it that way. Beautiful photo of a nice coin. Thanks for sharing.image

Thought I'd bump this thread since the grade is in from PCGS. They graded it MS61.

It has better surface preservation than MS61, so my hunch is that PCGS may have been a bit skittish about the color.

Nice coin and pictures. I went ahead and upgraded my Ricoh to a Coolpix 950 too. Pretty much whatever camera Russ has is what I want because he has a tendency to be able to find the highest quality low price cameras available.

The 61 may mean that they see it as dipped out, lack luster, and retoned with color they don't like.

Edited to add: Unless of course you submitted it as a cross over in the ANACS 62 holder. In that case the grading process may have gone like this:

Grader 1: Hey Joe, ANACS grades Barber quarters hgher than we do don't they?

    Grader 2: Yeah. They're a point higher.

    Grader 1: Thanks. MS61.

A pretty coin... based on your post the other day, I was going to guess MS62... I'm glad that I was correct.

the typical great photo... I like the coin too. I think 62 is reasonable and 61 is harsh. I tend to think they may have been too harsh not because of color, but possible light rub on the highest points of the design.
