That's one of those coins where the grade is pretty much irrelevant, and even though there is a PCGS registry set for which it's included, it only has a weight of 10, while the rest range from 1 to 3.

Actually, this thread seems to indicate the coin and the cert are worth more separated than together. I certainly would toss a bid at the cert myself.
the coin is cracked out and offered for sale by a dealer with noones knowledge of it's pedigree, it's just a 1913 Liberty Nickel. would you take the dealers word for it that the coin is genuine?? would you still plop down $4 million for it?? would you even give it more than a cursory glance in the showcase??

Excellent point. Without PCGS backing up the coin's authenticity, $4 million would be a stretch. A very big stretch.

I disagree. I think it's worth about a hundred buck less without the plastic (or whatever it is they charge for slabbing mega-rarities).
That nickel would be worth the same, if not more without its holder.

No, but then I wouldn't plop down 10% of that even in the holder either. It's not worth it--at least to me for an illicit coin. I would, however, pay the same amount holdered or not...just as I do for any other coin I buy.
