Anybody else grade "junk" just because they love it?
I get ragged all the time about who I collect.... I collect Chris Sabo. I realize his cards aren't worth the card-stock they're printed on (most of them anyway) but that's not what's important to me. I started collecting his stuff back in 1988 when I first started idolizing him... and haven't stopped. I like to think, this is what the true heart of this hobby is all about.
Each and every submission I make has to have at least 1 (or mult.) Chris Sabo cards just to be added to my personal collection. No matter what they come back as (7,8,9, or 10) I will treasure it forever and add it to my personal collection. YA YA YA, I KNOW... they're worthless... but not to me!
Does anyone else collect worthless (to just about everyone else) players/cards out there? Most of the time I can pick up Sabo cards for free! Of course I have to salvage them from commons boxes, but to me it's worth the effort.

This is why I spend an unhealthy amount of time leafing through my Willie Upshaw, Lloyd Moseby, Jesse Barfield, and Damaso Garcia rookies to see which one I want to send in for grading. I'm collecting a PSA 8 or above rookie from every player on my favorite team - the 1985 Blue Jays.
Here they are. Jeter collection
Just kidding....she bears with it and I love her almost as much as my cards for doing so.

That'll keep ya busy!
People went crazy over the "heroes highlights" and the "homerun heroes" boxes. The heroes highlights boxes were sold at special shows and featured a cool subset including Williams which at the time was selling like in the 50 buck range? Now? 4 bucks?
mike
It is not costly to collect them and a whole lot of fun. I did buy a PSA 10 Andy Van Slyke donruss rookie a couple of years ago for under $20. I still think it was one of my better buys as it is absolutely a GEM. They are hard to find since no one brings them out of the wood works.
I like having various Abbott and van Slyke cards put in sleeves then into the album sheets. Having them graded is too bulky. I like them raw and mint and they are stored safe enough.

Sometimes a collector can be really into someone obscure and slowly over time that guy starts to put up some numbers and others begin to consider him a star.
I started my Biggio set in 1990 and have been hard-core about Gemming the whole thing. I'll bet I've got a few hundred bucks worth of pretty desireable cards now...who knew???
Here's a pretty cool "Old School Image" of Chris Sabo from my library...I blew this up into a 12x18 and it look killer!!!
I too have a pretty sweet Biggio collection... I have hundreds (possibly 1000+) JUST Rc's of him. I have several BGS and PSA graded Rc's as well... I hope he manages to play a few more years!
ALWAYS Looking for Chris Sabo cards!
<< <i>I right-mouse-clicked and stole it! >>
...I'm sure you're the first guy that's done THAT! Enjoy it! I may eventually have to start watermarking the posts I put up, but I haven't seen any evidence that it's hurting business. If you ever want a really nice one that can be printed without any distortion LMK. It's an "open edition" image, so it won't be going up in price anytime soon.
