Anybody else grade "junk" just because they love it?

I get ragged all the time about who I collect.... I collect Chris Sabo. I realize his cards aren't worth the card-stock they're printed on (most of them anyway) but that's not what's important to me. I started collecting his stuff back in 1988 when I first started idolizing him... and haven't stopped. I like to think, this is what the true heart of this hobby is all about.

Each and every submission I make has to have at least 1 (or mult.) Chris Sabo cards just to be added to my personal collection. No matter what they come back as (7,8,9, or 10) I will treasure it forever and add it to my personal collection. YA YA YA, I KNOW... they're worthless... but not to me!

Does anyone else collect worthless (to just about everyone else) players/cards out there? Most of the time I can pick up Sabo cards for free! Of course I have to salvage them from commons boxes, but to me it's worth the effort.

ALWAYS Looking for Chris Sabo cards!

Ill send stuff in to be graded knowing I will never be selling them. I collect what I like whether its .99 or 99.00. So yes, I have had my share of "Chris Sabos" sent in to be graded image

  • Congrats to you on your Sabo collection! I like to think that is what the hobby is about too -- collecting what you like!

This is why I spend an unhealthy amount of time leafing through my Willie Upshaw, Lloyd Moseby, Jesse Barfield, and Damaso Garcia rookies to see which one I want to send in for grading. I'm collecting a PSA 8 or above rookie from every player on my favorite team - the 1985 Blue Jays.

I collect Derek Jeter cards. Most will never be worth anything, but I think some of the inserts and minor league cards look pretty cool.

    Here they are. Jeter collection
  • Interesting story about Sabo. I live about 30 miles north of Cincinnati. Years ago there was this card dealer that had card shows around here, always had obscure Reds there signing autographs. I guess this dealer paid Sabo and Paul O'Neal some money when they were green unknown rookies to autograph a bunch of baseballs. Well I guess they stiffed this dealer out of his baseballs and took his money. A year or two later Sabo got sued in small claims court in my rinky dink town. It was big news in the local paper having Sabo in court. Anyway, Sabo lost his case and had to pony up about ten dozen autographed balls to this dealer and pay court costs. lol He wasn't a happy camper, they quoted him in the paper as saying he'd never sign anything for anybody ever again.

According to my fiance every little rectangular piece of cardboard that passes through my hands is junk.

Just kidding....she bears with it and I love her almost as much as my cards for doing so.

I collect Larry Allen football cards. I don't generally have a lot of people bidding against me! I haven't actually sent any of his cards to PSA yet though. One of these days I will. I should be #1 on the Larry Allen set registry forever! Though he will be in the hall of fame one day he is on the O' line and not well spoken; not a great combination to make a player popular! : )

Alot of my favorite cards in my collection are mid grade. Some people may consider them junk in comparison to what they have in their set registry. They are the best way for me to collect what I like at an affordable price. Onefast, while your Sabos may not hold a high monetary value, they certainly arent worthless pieces of junk if you enjoy collecting them.

Larry Allen is an animal- it is not fair for a guy who can bench 700+ lbs. to be allowed to play with mortal men.

Hey onefast, I have been fighting this battle for a while now! Collect what you want, CRAP OR NOT! And GRADE the $hit too !! image And most IMPORTANTLY, don't give one ounce of thought to the clowns who snub so called "garbage" because they think they are just ohhhhhh so smart for collecting vintage only. I have said more than a few times that I would wipe my ass with that vintage JUNK before I did my beloved 70's and 80's cards image

I know I'm the only person on the board here that collects empty sports related whiskey decanters.

    I think they look great!

Some have cost more to ship - I paid a buck for one and it cost 9 bucks to ship!

    Ahhh beauty and the eye.....

And, the 92UD baseball set is still a favorite of mine!

    That'll keep ya busy!

People went crazy over the "heroes highlights" and the "homerun heroes" boxes. The heroes highlights boxes were sold at special shows and featured a cool subset including Williams which at the time was selling like in the 50 buck range? Now? 4 bucks?

I collect Jim Abbott and Andy Van Slyke.

It is not costly to collect them and a whole lot of fun. I did buy a PSA 10 Andy Van Slyke donruss rookie a couple of years ago for under $20. I still think it was one of my better buys as it is absolutely a GEM. They are hard to find since no one brings them out of the wood works.

I like having various Abbott and van Slyke cards put in sleeves then into the album sheets. Having them graded is too bulky. I like them raw and mint and they are stored safe enough.

  • Absolutely. Most of the stuff I collect is "worthless". I love Eric Davis, Darryl Strawberry, Garry Templeton, Jack Clark to name a few. My favorite guy to collect might be Bill Madlock. I'll submit stuff that I just want holdered for keepsake or uniformity in display.
Sometimes a collector can be really into someone obscure and slowly over time that guy starts to put up some numbers and others begin to consider him a star.
I started my Biggio set in 1990 and have been hard-core about Gemming the whole thing. I'll bet I've got a few hundred bucks worth of pretty desireable cards now...who knew???

Here's a pretty cool "Old School Image" of Chris Sabo from my library...I blew this up into a 12x18 and it look killer!!!

Sweet pic DGF... I right-mouse-clicked and stole it! I added it to my collection, Thanks!

I too have a pretty sweet Biggio collection... I have hundreds (possibly 1000+) JUST Rc's of him. I have several BGS and PSA graded Rc's as well... I hope he manages to play a few more years!

ALWAYS Looking for Chris Sabo cards!

...I'm sure you're the first guy that's done THAT! Enjoy it! I may eventually have to start watermarking the posts I put up, but I haven't seen any evidence that it's hurting business. If you ever want a really nice one that can be printed without any distortion LMK. It's an "open edition" image, so it won't be going up in price anytime soon.

  • Did someone say Chris Sabo? I had this display hanging on my wall as a kid. Back in the day, I would hide my fake ID behind the card one over from the left on the last row. :-)
