At one point early in my collecting, I was putting together a set of Peace dollars. I was buying most of my stuff from only one particular dealer at the time. This set was all certified stuff. One of the dollars I bought from him was in an ICG holder. The coin was fine and fit the grade (I couldn't tell you the date at this point). Later, the dealer had merged with another local shop and I decided to sell off what I had built so that I could focus on something else. The guy from the other shop was now responsible for buying. He wouldn't even buy back the coin because of the holder saying "it would never sell". The old owner jumped in and said that I had bought it from them and the offer then went to 10% back of bid.
  • WOW, Interesting stories. The only thing I got out of this is DEALERS STINK, sorry dealers, but if you can play the game then so can us collectors.

Normally if I get a low offer by PM I just delete it without reply. Next time I will say thanks for the laugh; best one I've had all week.

oh, I learned that lesson early! In junior high I purchased a decent 1835 half cent in solid XF from another kid (he was actually a serious kid collector himself) for $50, certainly a significant sum to me. For whatever reason I decided to sell it some time later, the dealer (in a mall, sheesh, well, I was 14) told me "hmmm - problems etc., really just a VF, he talked me down good. I was "grateful" to receive his tender offer of about $15. Some 3-4 weeks later, I recognized very clearly my coin in his 2X2 marked "Choice AU" at a hearty $110.00 sticker. Well well, I never quite forgot that little education! image

Goose, I remember well your super-choice '93 chain - had it been mine I don't know how I could've parted with it, but coins, they come and go.

Yeah, some dealer got me when I was a kid...not that bad though....luckily.
Nowadays, if I heard a kid got ripped like this, I would suggest he contact the local news stations/newspapers and have then do a quick little story on coin dealers, ethics, and kids.......they may not like the negative press image

I've been told I tolerate fools poorly...that may explain things if I have a problem with you. Current ebay items - Nothing at the moment

Nothing as bad as some of these posts. I did get multiple offers to buy some first strike Silver Eagle Proofs for a little over melt at $10. I declined and sold them the next day for $50 each.
  • The most insulting offer I ever received wasn't an offer. The Sarosis scowlingly refused to look at my coins at all because they were in ANACS slabs. If they would have politely said "We don't deal in ANACS graded coins," I would not have been insulted. Maybe a bit baffled (a coin's a coin after all), but not insulted. Instead the guy said quite loudly with an annoyed look on his face as I pulled the slabs from my bag, "WE DON'T BUY ANACS!" and turned his back on me. Jeezoman, I felt like yelling something right back at him - but that is not proper coin show etiquitte.

Do I love this one.... I had a 1955/55 DDO in EF45.I went over to my local coin shop where I thought this dealer was supposed to be my "friend".He offered me $280.Then I went to the monthly coin show in my area. The offers I received were between $400 and $825.Go figure.......One thing's for sure...a dealer is only going to be as honest as he/she has to be.TOM

I hate selling coins since it just makes me angry to get insulting offers from dealers.

A couple years ago I had an early 50's Jefferson in PCGS 68CAM that I was going to sell. At a show, I found a dealer who had a good assortment of early Jefferson proofs in similar grades and figured I'd see if he wanted the coin. He offered me $40.

New collectors, please educate yourself before spending money on coins; there are people who believe that using numismatic knowledge to rip the naïve is what this hobby is all about.
