Went To A Coin Show Today!!

Had a PCGS blue box of coins with me, mostly for show and tell. A dealer asked if I had anything to sell. I said yes but I doubt that anyone here will pay what I want for them. Was really odd when one guy pulled out the blue sheet for a sight seen PCGS coin. A browser at another table commented about being a farmer and I said "you mean one a those guys who buys at retail; sells at wholesale and pays freight both ways"? He said yep; actually that sounds a lot like a coin collector to me.
It got me to thinkin that maybe dealers don't get the coins they want/need because collectors are a smarter breed today and have lots of other venues in which to sell other than selling to a dealer.

I firmly believe that auction prices realized are the true current market indicators, whether major auctions or internet auctions.
It also makes me chuckle to see so many dealers bidding against collectors in these auctions, and then trying to mark up won lots by as much as 85%. Even 20% markup on auction lots would likely bury collector for many years.
Reiver coins went for lots of money, generally more than similar coins. Now we see dealers trying to resell Reiver coins on Ebay. What a joke!

The Bluesheet is often used as a tool to check the underlying strength of a particular date/type against Greysheet prices.
<< <i>Why sell to a dealer when you can likely sell to the same person that he might sell to. >>
Because I may have a client that you will never know of. While the internet has added great liquidity to the business is still is not the end-all that users believe it to be.

Thats true of course; I won't get your exact customer but I may get another one just as good. Then again eBay will get a lot more hits than a dealer's website will. I'm not tying to put down dealers, its just that they would not be the first place I would go to if I'm looking to sell.
