My newest Barber half - care to guess the grade

Well here it is, it's a 1894-S Barber half, certified by PCGS. I received the coin today, and the coin is 10 times nicer than this crummy image. The coin has fantastic eye appeal, and nice natural light toning over very lustrous surfaces.

Edited to add: PCGS gave this coin an AU-50 grade........give me a break!

AU-55, and I like the looks of it from the photo, so based on your quote, it must really be nice!

    That is a beautyimageimage

I went to a small coin show in San Antonio today and picked up 18 Barber halves in F15 or so. Awesome total considering I've been lucky to find three coins with decent "Liberty" at a time!

I was originally thinking 53 from the photo, but based on your comment I bumped my guess to 55. Thier must be something that we are not seeing that led PCGS to go the 50 route? Anyway looks nice!

better than 50 unless there are hairlines we can not see

    58.

  • I normally stay away from AU-50 graded coins, but this coin had a much better look to it than most AU-50's I've seen. The coin has nice full details on the obverse stars, pretty good hair detail above the forehead, strong reverse, nice luster, and I didn't see any hairlines. Then again, PCGS has never been wrong before on any of their grades. image

Based on the image Dan provided, I'd call this 1894-S at least an AU 55. Without having the coin in hand I can't say whether or not its an AU 58.

PCGS calling this coin an AU 50 is ridiculous.

The feather detail on the neck is a give away for a 55 grade as it seams very sharp along with the luster. Nice coin.
