Why I like this place.

It seems the most frequent compliment I hear on this board is

"How much I learned by being here"

I would have to agree with that statement 100 %.

A friend of mine came by last night and gave me a list of gold coins he mistakenly bought around 1990??? when the coin market was at its peak and he lost quite a bit of value then.
He knows very little about coins and asked me what the value was and what he should do with them.

I was reminded of how much I learned here (I never bought gold or had any prior dealings with gold) and was pleased at the ease in which I could take him through a tour of E-bay and PCGS prices and Heritage auctions and of course previous threads concerning gold coins and enlighten him with what I learned here on these boards.

So time to brag on fellow forum members.
Who have you learned a lot from here on these boards?

Some obvious names come to mind:

Coppercoins--lincoln cents
FC57Coins--Franklin series

I don't want to list too many because I want to know your choices.

Thanks for reading

Rookie Joe

Just to many names to list . I have found that not only is there much to learn from the seasoned collector / dealer , but also from the YN's . I love this place . image

  • Charles, Greg, Marty and Russ come to mind. Alot that I dont even know their names have informed and inspired me as well. Good thread!
    How much for that one
  • I really like the enthusiasm for numismatics that is here. I've changed the way that I collect coins all together because of the time I've spent on these forums. There are so many people on these forums that I have learned so much from that it's really hard to list them all.

  • Aside from the knowledge I have accumulated as a member here I have to say that without this forum it is entirely possible that I may have lost interest in numismatics - at least to some degree. I live in a small town. We do have a coin shop here, but if you want anything beyond proof/mint sets (and the date ranges are only from about 1975 to 1990) and heavily circulated common date Morgans you're out of luck. There aren't many collectors where I live, and certainly none that share my passion. This forum has given me a place to go on a daily basis where I can interract with other people who care about this hobby as much as I do. That in itself is a large part of keeping me active in numismatics.

If I hadn't joined this forum I never would have gone to a coin show. If I hadn't joined this forum I never would have joined the ANA. If I hadn't joined this forum my "collection" would still be just a random accumulation instead of a structured endeavor representing real value, both financial and personal.

Because of my daily/nightly visits here I have become much more serious about this hobby and the people around me are aware of it. Often times my girlfriend will sit and chat with me as I read the boards. As a result she knows more about coins than the average American. She has demonstrated her knowledge to me in the past (and completely floored me) by doing things like naming every major grade from P to MS and making off the cuff comments about pictures she sees me looking at. If instead of reading these boards every night I was sitting with a book by QDB or Breen I seriously doubt she would be anywhere near as involved as she is.
