I'm assuming you're referring to the Palm Beach Coin Show at the Palm Beach Convention Center scheduled for March1 - 4?

Why did a lot of dealers cancel? Was this ever a strong show?

I can't speak for everybody, but here are some reasons:

Travel fatigue. There are many large conventions coming up in the next two months. Long Beach was less than two weeks ago, and Baltimore, Santa Clara, ANA and Central States are coming soon.

Travel options. Palm Beach International Airport (PBI), although user friendly, does not have many flights departing or arriving daily. Fort Lauderdale International (FLL), which has more flights, is 50 miles away and Miami International (MIA) is more than 75 miles away. The last time I flew into PBI we landed at 1:45am, the flight was 3 1/2 hours late. Finding transporttion to the hotel was another matter which took another half hour. I took a departing flight outbound at 1:30pm, which was United Airlines' only flight of the day.

Past experiences. The last few Palm Beach shows have been decent, but not blockbusters. They are forgettable as a whole. The show hasn't been operating long, so there are still many kinks and logistical issues that have not been fully resolved yet.

Lodging (1). March is the start of the spring break season, and as a result hotel rooms are very expensive. There are no hotel rooms in the county that have rates of less than $230 per night during the show dates. For a room that costs less than $230 per night are at least one hour away.

Lodging (2). There is a lack of quality hotels immediately surrounding the convention center. The Marriott is the only hotel within walking distance to the convention center. I stayed there once, and the place isn't very nice. Definitely not worth more than $70 per night.

Convention and Bourse Politics. There are plenty of dealers who are dissatisfied with the politics of table locations and other bourse logistics. I won't get into details.

Those are some points that I can think of.

I went to the show last March, and it was the quietest show I ever attended. It was frankly depressing.

I went last year, and its no where near the calibre of FUN, Baltimore, or even the ANA. Long Beach as well, but going by others as I havenot been to one of those since all the way across the country.

I have to chime in on this one.....I was looking forward to it....but now I completely agree with Laura and WTCG ....just tired looking at the upcoming show schedule....wish it was just Fri/Sat only ...........on the bright side, I was out shooting all morning in 20 degree weather.....FL today was warm and sunny ....I also think it is bad that local dealers pay $150 and out of town dealer who have bigger expenses have to pay $500

  • I'm going on Thursday. I was going on Wed (day off) but found out it was dealers only. I traded days and got off Thursday. It's only a 1/2 hr ride for me.
There are quite a few hotels around that arent downtown, Theres an extended stay off 95 thats really nice. The PB airport Hilton is very nice. I HOPE IT'S A GOOD SHOW I'VE BEEN LOOKING FORWARD TO IT.

If you post your business names I can stop by and say hello. I'll print this out and bring it with me.

Palm Beach Gardens (PGA BLVD) is about 15-20 minutes away, there are a lot of hotels there just off the highway that should be much less.

I checked there also, and the average rate is about $260 per night.

I am staying in Fort Lauderdale at the beachfront hotel I stayed at previously during the 2005 FUN show. The rate is $170 per night.

For those people who live in the area, how is the morning commute from Fort Lauderdale to Palm Beach in the morning? How about the reverse direction in the evening?

I previously lived in S. Florida. I would count on a solid hour plus, barring any traffic disruptions.
  • If you can Take the turnpike get off at Okeechobee blvd. east to the convention center about 6 miles. It will save you tons of time commuting.

It's murder. I wouldn't do it during rush hour. I-95 is under construction thru much of Palm Beach County. Wait till later in the morning or go west & take the turnpike. It's going to be a long haul regardless.

  • Dittos. Try to stay off I-95. Last time I had Jury Duty (just blocks from the Convention Center) I took me 1 hour and 45 minutes one day, 45 minutes the next and one trip took me just 25 minutes.

From Boca or Delray, I just go straight north up Military Trail to Okeechobee and make a right. Fastest way for me to get to the PBC Airport also.
