What do you think are the real underrated coins...

in your particular area of interest? I have seen plenty of marketing of what are generally considered, "scarce," or "rare." But, I don't find much of what is touted in this manner as scarce or rare. If you had money to waste, you could have had at least 25 1901-S quarters in the last couple of months. Or, if you really wanted, you could have obtained double digit quantities of "Huge O" 1854 quarters, which seem to be a hot flavor right now. In addition, the populations on these coins would not put them in the rarified air that they seem to occupy. I guess many people would be hesitant to give up what they believe to be the "hard to find" coins in their area of expertise, but maybe some of you would shed some light on some coins that are really overlooked. I, for one, collect Seated and Barber material. In Seated Halves, I have had trouble getting any numbers on 1856-s and 1857-s halves. In Barber halves, I have had to work to get the New Orleans coins from 1896 and 1901. As for Seated quarters, there are several difficult dates. If I had to pick a couple, other than the SD, HO, LO, etc., I would have to pick the 60-s and the 61-s. The CCs are available if you want to throw down several thousand dollars. I understand that there are several factors that affect availability. The coins that are "hot" right now should be in every dealer's inventory. But, what are some coins that any of you guys feel are just not available if you wanted to get a few decent examples.

Some of the weird date/mint BTW and Carver-Washington halves come to mind. They don't cost all that much, when they show up, but some of them just don't -- show up, that is.

Without being flippant I think top quality coins ( I'm talking front line stuff here) are underrated. Tired coins from worn out dies are overrated.

My personal favorites right now would be....(gulp).....1931-D lincoln unc, 1936-D Washington unc, key date 20th century silver vf and up, full strike ms65 silver..(don't laugh, they can be tough to find).

Thats my take on it anyway

For circulated Buffalos finding a coin with a good strike (not necessarily a great strike), in AU55 or AU58, the three following dates require a good relationship with a dealer: 1920-D, 1921-S, 1924-S (probably takes a great relationship). There are others which are close but I just never see these three for sale unless they are "market" graded. Even the market graded coins are difficult to find in high AU.

Try and find a nice G, VG, or Fine 1801 or 1802 half dollar.

Don't even get me started on the draped bust dimes and half dimes.

Baley, even the 1803 and 1805 drapes are now difficult. If one wants a G, VG or F coin, the only ones readily found are 1806 and 1807. Likely it will not be long before they also disappear. The 1801 and 1802 have indeed vanished.

Thanks for the replies. I had not seen the list on the other thread from coinguy. I do appreciate the specific dates, mintmarks, and conditions, as that was where I was headed. I consider you guys and gals some of the most knowledgable people in your areas, so it is nice to pick some brains of the experts. Also (separate from coinguy's thread), I am not worried about "value," per say. I like the idea of which coins you would buy, period, if they were out there. I guess, in the end, putting those on paper will not help you find them any better, so, I appreciate the responses.

Circ mint marked barbers F-XF
Circ seated O and S mints VF-AU 1838-1873
Circ mint-marked early buffs, merc, walkers VF-AU
Orig unc bust coins with no rub - good luck!!!!
All the above problem free or nearly so.

Gem orig toned unc/pf bust, seated, and barbers, esp early
mint marks in all series and early Philly pieces (pre 1873)
Larger denominations do get preferential treatment.

Problem free anything that is scarce and under demand.

Beautifully toned early commemorative coins in MS65 and higher. Their historical significance, extremely limited mintages, and intricately beautiful designs. Add all these up and add gorgeous color toning to the equation, and you're left with a real unique treasure.
