  • That looks like a picture of a dirty old zinc cent.

    Steel/zinc, rather.
  • Looks like a waste of time and money. It looks like a typical circulated zinc cent to me.

See if it sticks to a magnet.
  • Looks like steel.

Some day somebody may actually post one of these threads and it'll be a real copper example.

    coinfacts sez:

Production of Proofs was suspended from 1943 to 1949 because of World War II and its aftermath. Rare errors on bronze planchets are known - beware of counterfeits (bronze will not be attracted to a magnet).

Yeah, taken from coinfacts like that guy did some years ago (dragonoffire, I think but I may be mistaken)

Authentic ones are worth upwards of $50,000.

New collectors, please educate yourself before spending money on coins; there are people who believe that using numismatic knowledge to rip the naïve is what this hobby is all about.

    RSundermier,

You almost certainly have a old corroded steel cent. However, if it really were a copper cent, I'd guess it would worth around $20,000 in a similar state of preservation. Maybe more.

Stephunter was right. Simple and quick magnet test.

set your expectations................very low. the probability that you have a GENUINE 43 copper is, well, less then .001% it's a steely or a fake.
  • Shag Me Sez!! One Billion $$$, for a 1943 copper penny, now for the junk coin you have, throw it away and then you won't have no more cents, just like you non-cents ?. This is why some have too much time on their hands.

The auction says it's made of lead. Good detective work camaro.
  • First, as everyone else said, it's probably a corroded steel cent. The magnet test will tell the tale.

However, don't get discouraged, even if it's steel. Even though you'll almost certainly never find a $50,000 coin in your change, the fun in collecting is looking for unusual things. Hell, I was excited the first (and only) time I got a Jefferson bison in my change, and that's worth approximately 5 cents. image
If you haven't noticed, I'm single and miserable and I've got four albums of bitching about it that I would offer as proof.

It's not worth more than face value until its been authenticated by a recognized expert.

Yes just give it the magnet test. However, be carefull you don't use a copper magnet. A brass or Bronze magnet should not be used either. If none of these are available, try the Alnico magnets.
