Steel/zinc, rather.

Production of Proofs was suspended from 1943 to 1949 because of World War II and its aftermath. Rare errors on bronze planchets are known - beware of counterfeits (bronze will not be attracted to a magnet).

Yeah, taken from coinfacts like that guy did some years ago (dragonoffire, I think but I may be mistaken)
New collectors, please educate yourself before spending money on coins; there are people who believe that using numismatic knowledge to rip the naïve is what this hobby is all about.
You almost certainly have a old corroded steel cent. However, if it really were a copper cent, I'd guess it would worth around $20,000 in a similar state of preservation. Maybe more.

However, don't get discouraged, even if it's steel. Even though you'll almost certainly never find a $50,000 coin in your change, the fun in collecting is looking for unusual things. Hell, I was excited the first (and only) time I got a Jefferson bison in my change, and that's worth approximately 5 cents.

Somebody here may win the lottery, too. Anything's possible, but consider the odds.
