Can someone explain "cameo" to me?

Ok I have been reading a lot about Cameo coins but I really havent heard it explained real well. Can someone show me a side by side picture difference so I have a better idea what frosted devices mean? (what ever that means....)

Cameo is the contrast between the devices, (raised portions), and the fields, (flat portions), of a coin. Think of a woman's cameo brooch with an ivory bust inlaid in an ebony circle.

Extreme contrast - very white devices, and very black fields - is Deep Cameo.

The first coin is a Cameo, the second a Deep Cameo.

Here's an example of a coin without enough contrast to be called CAM or DCAM:

  • Thanks that helps me....

Basicly the darker the color contrast between the image and the smooth portion of the coin is what makes it a cameo.

Bingo! The real challenge is telling the difference between the PF and CAM, and CAM and DCAM. The differences vary by coin type and by TPG...Mike

I probably should have left a caveat that the "test" was for McDonnis... not for the resident experts in the bunch...image

    Russ -

EXCELLENT examples of CAM and DCAM coins. Well then again your are some kinda expert in that field, eh? image

  • A Cameo coin has contrast between the field and the device. They look like they are two different colors or tones when looked at from a straight angle.
