  It looks like it was caused by reworking the die, but not quite. What was the employee trying to remove to do that?

  These closely spaced, parallel die gouges were most likely made by a feed finger scraping across the die face. These can be very dramatic in Lincoln cents. They occur in many denominations and across many years.
