Question on an 1834 bust half

JRoccoJRocco Posts: 14,277 ✭✭✭✭✭
This is an 1834 bust half that shows a 5/5 (?) on the reverse. The coin also shows a nice double clash if that helps at all. Any help is appreciated

The question, as currently posed, is a bit vague, not to mention, invisible.image

Are you actually going to ask the question?

All I see is a statement about what your bust half has. Are you looking for an Overton number? Value, Rarity or anything in between?

I though most members here would understand the post and opine on the thread, I didn't think I had to ask any specific question.
But, now that you asked--OK -- Any ideas on the Overton number? Value, Rarity or anything in between?

  • With what little there is to go on in the pics - O-101 R.1 with the stand to the '5' recut.

Thanks for the reply DP. I was not really sure if the recut 5 was a common occurence on the 34. It is a large date, small letter variety that is a fairly common bustie. Thanks again.

  • No problem, JR.
The recut '5' is diagnostic for the O-101. Also, look at the vertical stripes in the shield. On the first stripe in the 5th set of them (counting from the left), you'll notice that it extends between the horizontal stripes (crossbars) to about the 5th one. This is also diagnostic to the variety.

Only the first three 1834 varieties are Large Date Large Letters. The O-101 is the only one these that has a recut 5, and the only 1834 with that strange pointed top 5. The C position under the stem is also an obvious determination point amongst these three varieties.

  • Mozin, I think you and I must look at bust halves in quite the same manner.
There is the obvious sometimes... but when the obvious isn't so obvious, we use our own diagnostics that aren't written in the books. Its saved me some mistakes more often than not. Good job.

If I could respond without looking like a brown nose here. Thanks a million DP and Mozin. It is because of members like you, who choose to add your knowledge and experience so that those like myself can listen and learn. This is what makes these boards great and proves once again that you can learn so much from a member who is willing to help and explain something as opposed to a 100 post thread that adds nothing. It doesn't matter who is asking the question or what the subject matter is, it is the willingness of members like you 2 guys, that helps "teach" everyone who reads these threads.

  • That's much appreciated, JR. Just make sure not to miss some important little tidbits along the way, even in those 200 post threads.
I've been collecting for about 38 years, and part time dealing for 21. I've never tired of our hobby, and still learn something new every day, even from much younger and less experienced numismatists. As an example, I've only been here for a couple of weeks now, and have gained all kinds of brain awakenings from so many of these board members. The knowledge is unbelievable!

And you thought you were a good sucker upper!

    JRocco,

You are welcome. We retirees need something to perk us up so we don't get dementia.image

    Deputy Pud,

Nice to have you join the CU boards. PM me and let's talk about our Bustie interests.
