If one ends a listing early WITHOUT cancelling all bids, does he have any obligation to the current high bidder?

I believe not. An auction may end if the seller no longer has the item available. Has happened to me as a buyer and I'm just left without recourse. Part of business -- sellers get more money from a storefront sale, flea market, coin show sale, or a "discreet" off-ebay sale. I don't like it, but I live with it.
  • no obligation. When you end the auction that has bids, you click on the cancel all bids and
end auctiion feature. of course, ebay still gets their listing fees, just no final value fee.
