PSA 9 COBB

This one in Goodwin's auction is a new one to me. Anyone familiar with this 1921 W551?? COBB
My focus, 1970 Topps Baseball Raw and Graded, pre 1989 PSA Hockey and 1933 INDIAN GUM ! Yikes!!

    The 551's are from what they call strip cards. I think, but am not sure they came in a panel of 3? does it matter when it was cut?

    I would agree with you if a factory cut these cards. These were hand cut, after the fact. IMO it makes no matter when they were cut. Scizzors have not changed that much since they were invented. These strip cards need to be cut properly and that means allowing the border to remain intact. of which this cobb appears not to have had done. If i remm did not these cards have a black line that showed where the border ended?

    I see your point, although I would not be interested in that card for even 10% of the current bid simply based on the generic picture and obscurity of the issue, and if I knew it was hand cut any time in the recent past, I wouldn't pay any price for it. JMHO.image

    Here is a pic of an uncut W551 strip. There are 10 baseball players on the strip. I think there are other W551 strips, but none of them are baseball players, so the strip contains the complete set as far as bbcard collectors are concerned.

    Ty Cobb
    Wally Pipp
    Tris Speaker
    Dave Bancroft
    Casey Stengel
    Jess Barnes
    Home Run Baker
    Walter Johnson
    George Sisler

    8 HOFers on the strip! Plus Wally Pipp is well known as well.

    I think I can get a 8 or 9 on all the cards except for the Ruth and Sisler (because they are on the end and has more handling issues). Of course, it will take a steady hand to cut them.

    as for the aesthetics of the Cobb card, I'd say this E90-1 is UGLIER, yet it is even more expensive.
