Spots on PF and MS coins

I filled my Lincoln cent collection with dozens of PF and MS cents going back to 1930 about 10 years ago. The album has been sitting in my safe all that time. When I took it out to look at the coins recently about tweny of them have tiny dark corrosion spots on them. It is a Dansco 8100 "Lincoln Cents including proof-only issues" album with the sliding plastic on both sides of coins on each page. I thought this was acid-free construction but maybe not.

Any ideas on why so many of my nice coins are now ruined?

Do you put dessicants in the safe to keep the humidity down? A friend of mine kept his Dansco's and Proof sets in a fire proof safe for a number of years and the Dansco's had mildew on them and many of the coins in the albums and proof sets had severe corrosion spots all over them. A couple of coins toned nicely, but many were ruined. More were ruined in the proof sets than the Dansco's. Fireproof safes have some kind of flame retardant in their walls that promotes condensation and results in high humidity in the safe.

Albums are usually not good for long term storage and cents are especially prone to
problems. Some dates are more prone to problems than others as well. The '68 and
    '84-D usually have problems.

Sorry to hear of the problem and welcome aboard.
