Some coins are just plain "Interesting"
  • something tells me this is a trick grading question and that both of them are graded MS64 for some bizzare reason...

There's something very, very screwy going on awound here...image

It really does almost seem to be a trick question... the 71-D looks very nice and is probably 66 or perhaps 67. The 70 may be one of those that just never comes nice (I am sure you already appreciate the point I am making...) and may have received the benefit of any doubts... 64 is my guess

Thanks all. The 70 is one of a group of 39 clad MS65's I recently purchased sight unseen. The 71-D is a recent submission of mine. I count the 71-D an easy 6, shot 7, and the 70-P a 4. Coinkat is right about the P being tough (and about the grades image ), but I don't think the graders gave it the nod because of their interest in modern nuance. JMO Based on a dozen others in the box, there is easily a two point spread in what can go into a 5 holder. Amazing.

I have some early clad quarters that are raw and I postpone submitting them. And I think part of the reason is the fear I have about the difference in what can and may not get the warranted grade...image maybe someday... and the same can be said for Jeffs.

How can anyone call that 1970 a 65. There is so many marks on the neck I wouldn't want it as an AU.

I have this feeling that the 70 has fields that are outstanding and nicks on the neck are not as bad in person. Having said that, it still does not explain the reason the 71-D is in a 65 holder and that seems to be the big concern. The 71-D looks to be a 66 minimum
