Would the owner of this coin who no doubt would have to be an advanced collector/specialist really choose to sell a great rarity like this on e-bay and also without a reserve?
The biggest score I saw for a buyer was a 2004 4-piece proof platinum set that went for $1600.00-- well below mint issue price. The seller was a Canadian kid with no feedback. A week and a half later, the buyer gave him an A+ feedback comment. o.O

<< <i>A great deal at that level. At $28,000, you ought to have your head examined, IMHO. >>
David, I bid that so that no one would get taken by the Ebay seller. And, there is no "great deal" involved. I'm very confident that the seller has no such coin to deliver.
David, I handle it a number of different ways, which I prefer not to reveal here. Thus far, my account has not received any negatives. Eventually I will probably receive one or more.

I have corresponded with the scammer (and left negative feedback, which I will explain later). Here is ihis first message to me:

I then used Ebay's "Find Contact Information" option and got the name and phone number of the seller whose account the item was sold under. I called him, and much to my shock (NOT), the gentleman had not used his account in a couple of years. I filled him in and asked that he contact Ebay to let them know what had happened. As I had received confirmation of my presumption that the account had been compromised/hijacked by a scammer, I immediately left negative feedback
Edited to add: Streeter, the bad news is that there will be no finder's fee. The good news is that now you can stop camping out next to your mailbox.
Well, maybe my second warning got through to Ebay:
"The following is a notice from eBay Trust & Safety regarding:
Item Number - 8384455759
Item Title - 1849 Norris, Grieg and Norris $5 Half Eagle AU-55 PCGS
Our records show that you placed a bid on this item. We removed this item from the Site and cancelled your bid because it appears that the seller's account has been compromised and used by an unauthorized third party...."

<< <i>If they would have accepted pay-pal you can get your funds back. Since they did not offer this the winning bidder is hosed. >>
No I'm not "hosed". I was dead serious when I posted "I hope it goes for less than $28,000", as that was my maximum bid.

It's only proper that you compensate me handsomely with a substantial finders fee. With this in mind...may I suggest $2,000.
I'l just wait by the mailbox.

Sounds like a great plan. However, I suggest that you bring lots of food, a sleeping bag, reading material, a port-a-potty and other necessities.
You agree with the 2k. I also accept tips

I was ready to go to NY and pick it up in person for you. THAT would have surprised our little scammer!
