Just how rare is that 1972 type 2 IKE?

I really wanna know!

I believe current thinking is that the T2 is a one die (reverse) coin which at that time limits the mintage to roughly 100,000. The single reverse die was a San Francisco silver Ike reverse die that somehow found its way to the Philadelphia mint. Thus the reverse of this T2 Philly Ike is the same as the reverse of the '72 silver Ike (the Earth has an incusive line to represent the islands off Florida rather than the robust islands seen in T1 and T3 Ikes).

I have read that essentially all of the T2's were distributed before discovery and that most of them wound up in cassinos. Thus an uncommon and unusual Ike with vanishing few in high-grade.

The Ike Pros like James Sego and Brian Vaile will know a lot more than I but this is a start. Rob

I'll tell you how tough that coin is:

I've looked at thousands or hundreds of thousands of Ikes and never cherry picked a Type II 72-P. That's looking at every single 72-P at every show I've been to since 1986.

Bought and sold a ton, but never found one.

Suggest you hang on to all you can, especially the higher end ones. MS64 and above are exceedingly rare.

    Good Luck

Thanks you guys, I have one and you know once you find a good thing you can never get enough of it...When coins are rare, those are the ones I want...and if I have one I want more....so that means I have some work to do....The one I have I would say is a 63 minimum maybe a 64 it has no real dings just weak in the LIB area...here's to grabbing some more!!!

    I have a 64; hope one day to up-grade to a 65.

I have found a few,...but none in 64 or better.....Those, I had to buy already "made".
Last year was very, very lean one for me in finding any Type 2's raw. (I only found ONE all year!)

This year started out GREAT with finding (2) at the FUN show...but only after spending two FULL days
and checking EVERY table at the show. (I had to use one in a trade to help get a little ole Ike that I needed).

This 72-P Type 2 is nothing new. It's been widely known amoung Ike enthusiasts for a LONG time.
It has been published, pictured and publicized to such an extent that serious and newbee Ikesters alike have been
searching high and low, under every rock, in every nook and cranny in ferreting out what few MS specimens
that remain. Finding one raw these days is like finding an Easter egg in a bag of Holloween candy! image

I believe the MS64 pop figures are rather inflated due to numerous crack-out attempts to land that ellusive 65 rating.
I also believe that the MS65 figures are slightly inflated because of a few nice ones trying to make the
    "next to impossible" MS66 rating.
Cherrish those 64's and 65's!.....The 62's and 63's are still out there, but getting MUCH fewer and further between finds.

When you DO find one, your heart rate doubles instantly, your eyes get bug-eyed wide, adrenaline surges through
your body and you let out an uncontrolable "WHOOP" of joy!!image
    WOW!....now THAT is what I call a reward-rush and feels-SO-good satisfaction of coin collecting!image

I had a friend bring over his collection. He was really a novice (not insult). He had a 72-P Ike in a 2x2. I looked and sure enough, T2, AU!

I found one, in AU, about a year ago.I think this is a cool coin to look for.

I learned about this coin on this board awhile back.

    Thanks people.image

Well then if those are 64's then mine is lower maybe a 63...mine is a weaker strike maybe a later die state...it is a very nice coin other than the real weak spots in the LI area of the coin.

I found one in a $35 roll from Ebay seller "Halfdollarmike" a little over a year ago (I think he's gone now, or under a different name)

It turned out to be a PCGS 64image
