Personally, I think FEDEX is fantastic...I mean you get a coin overnight!! In a nice box....and you can track it as it travels...it's like a GAME and a DELIVERY!

Neither FEDEX nor UPS will knowingly insure coins so if you use their services you better have some other source of insurance lined up.

The only problem I've ever had with FedEx was a newbie mistake that was partially my fault. I had to ship a package to Canada, which required me to do all the shipping manifest preparation online, then drop the package off (I usually just pay at the counter). I got home and didn't have the tracking number and couldn't record of it in my online account. Several phone calls to FedEx later, someone was able to help me find it in the most counterintuitive place. The online rate calculator for Canada is also inaccurate. It gives you the same rate regardless of where within Canada you're shipping. The truth comes later on your credit card.

Regarding coin insurance, there are third-party insurers that you can use for this purpose. Their rates are generally much less than the post office, too.

The only problem I ever had with FEDEX and Heritage is that I bought 2 proof Morgans ($5000) and Heritage shipped them FedEx signature required. I never received them, FedEx records show that they will dropped off on the porch, even though they had Sig required. Heritage insurance wouldn't cover them because Fed-Ex said they were delivered. Fed-Ex wouldn't cover them because they don't insure coins and Heritage marked the value at 0. I filed a police report and everything, but both parties basicly told me I was SOL. Two months later the snow melted and there was a Fed-Ex package in the bushes, seems it had blown off the porch behind the bushes. Even though Fed-Ex was at fault for now getting a signature, if the package had been stolen I would have been out 5 grand!

You need private insurance to use Fedex.

Well, you can use Fedex without private insurance, but they will not honor claims for coins, if they turn up missing.

I've used them in the past, and didn't care for their inconsistency.

Years ago, I used to ship hundreds of thousands of dollars of industrial platinum, palladium, and rhodium materials throght Fedex. Never once had a problem - never once were they late.

I don't mind getting stuff via Fedex but I wish their people were better trained (and would come later
in the day when I am at home

). Some things I end up signing for and some not, coming from the
same numismatic co. at different times of the year.

Someone sent a Christmas gift basket, Got a postcard 3 weeks later saying it had incorrect info which made delivery impossible. When I finally got through to the genius there, I asked for an explanation as to why they would send a postcard to notify me that my address was wrong. She wouldn't bite. In my area, Fedex absolutely blowz.

Must have been the one that Customs decided to look at. Canada IS another country and there is additional paperwork for International. You lucked out on the 7 that went through.

Actually the smart thing to do if you know the sender is using FEDEX is to call your local FEDEX branch and have them hold the package for pickup OR even better have the sender address the the package to

On more than one occasion they have left packages at people's front doors when they were supposed to have obtained signatures. I am also aware of drivers having left packages outside residences and incorrectly stating/claiming that there were release signatures on file.

Despite the occasional problems above, and that I don't think it's as safe as registered/insured mail, overall, it is a great way/option to be able to ship packages.

I had a package worth about $500 sitting outside my apartment for two days until my neighbors picked it up. Thankfully no one took it (shady characters in the area too).

Best part was, it was signature required. USPS decided since Fedex left a package sitting there, they would put all my mail there as well! Good thing neither myself nor my girlfriend had our credit cards shipped that week. Filed a complaint with both and nothing ever happened. Other then that one occasion, never had a problem with Fedex.

UPS on the other hand............

I've never had a problem, but a few years ago I was driving to work behind a Fedex truck and the back door bounced open. A few packages fell out, with more looking to follow. I tried to wave the guy over but he ignored me, so I called the local number where the person on the phone was less than interested. Somehow I think a few people had packages go missing that week.

Lots of problems these days with Fedex as they changed their policy on home deliveries and home based businesses. That is regardless of whether or not you have a signature release on file, they are leaving deliveries at the door. Period.

I'm back to Express mail accordingly.

I insist on receiving my coin purchases by registered insured mail. If not initially offered by the seller, I request registered, and offer to pay the extra cost.

FedEx is very good on the whole. I have never had a FedEx package lost in transit although several have been damaged or delayed.

I can't stand registered or standard insured mail.

I have never had a problem with FEDEX GROUND(formally ROADWAY) when I send corvette parts but I would NEVER use FEDEX OVERNIGHT for a coin.

If you read the reverse of their shipping agreement very carefully for their terms and conditions which may be found in their FEDEX GROUND TARIFF......You JUST PLAIN AIN'T GONNA COLLECT ON A UNIQUE ITEM. You'd better have private insurance.

I'd like to add that I use FEDEX GROUND exclusively in my business and as long as the recipient's driver is not new then there will be no problems. The problems happen with rural deliveries and with inexperienced delivery drivers.

I've been un-happy finding a fed-ex package sitting out on my porch, but I do prefer that to having to go pick it up.

I've also been ripped off by my fed-ex guy - but not on a delivery. He came to the door bringing me some coins I was excitedly waiting on and wanted to talk about a palm in my front yard. It was about 5' tall but growing sideways and that upset him. He knew all about palm trees and told me it was a "sejoia" (sp) and he wanted to keep talking about it when all I wanted was for him to give me my coins and leave.

Eventually I told him he could dig it up and nurse it back to health if he replaced it with some other bush. I do have a hatred for palm trees ( the palms fall and rats like to live in them) and I've paid people before to cut them down and remove them from my property.

Later I saw this type of palm selling at the Home Depot for $50 for a small 8" one so he got probably a $500 palm for the cost of a $20 bush (which died after he planted it).
