Question re an 1879-CC PCGS MS63 Morgan ... Keep It Or Return It???

I just received the final coin for my CC Morgan series and am a bit disappointed. All of the coins that I have received from the dealer in the past have been of the highest quality. However, I am not sure if the coin pictured below is of average or low quality for the grade or if all of the 79-CC's tend to be overgraded. The coin doesn't suck, it just doesn't particularly move me either. Yet, when I look at comparable 79-CC MS63's online, this one is actually a bit better than most that I have seen. Every other Morgan in my collection has a bit of a "wow" factor for the grade, but this one just seems to be average. Do I keep the coin and hope to upgrade it someday, or take advantage of the 5 day return provision and wait for a better MS63. At $5k+, I really want to love the coin. Keep in mind that I really just can't afford a 64 right now. Maybe I should search around for a PL??? Thanks in advance for your comments image

If you don't like it NOW, then return it...you'll probably never enjoy it.

If your first impression is disappointment, your more permanent reaction will almost certainly be disappointment, too.

If you don't like it now.............what's gonna change to make you like? I don't know how you store your coins, but if it is in a way that you can see most of them at the same time, your eyes will be drawn to this eyesore and you'll always ask yourself why you kept it. Opt out and get one that more matches the rest of your collection and you'll be happier for it.........Rick

    Hello!

I think you got a fair price for the coin, per redbook values, any way. CC dollars do tend to have more bagmarks than other mints because of the remote location and relatively primitive machinery. I think it's a nice coin, any way. perhaps CC dollars do tend to overgrade because of the larger amount of bagmarks compared to other mints. For being an early date CC, I say keep it. But I'm not very experienced and I only have four Morgans and I think 500 dollars is a humongous amount of money. But if you don't like the coin now, then you will never be truly happy with it. It's your money, do what you like. image

Based on your following quote from the post: << I just received the final coin for my CC Morgan series and am a bit disappointed. >>

I totally agree with Greg's following recommendation: << If you don't like it NOW, then return it...you'll probably never enjoy it. >>

If you are like me, you may prefer some cameo contrast between frosty devices and Semi-PL to PL/DMPL reflective fields, which in my opinion adds a lot of eye appeal to Morgan Dollars.

Don't spend $5000 on something that doesn't totally please you. Any reputable coin dealer would give you the same advice, so that you will be pleased to purchase from them again in the future. Otherwise this will bother you for a long time, and may taint your future opinion of this specific dealer.

I'm with the large majority - if you don't like it, don't force yourself to keep it. The only time I might give different advice would be if the coin were irreplaceable or virtually so, but this is not such a coin.

With respect to looking for a PL example - abrasions, bag-marks and other flaws are usually magnified by the PL surfaces, so don't expect much from such a search.

Lastly, while the strong market of the past few years has spoiled many collectors who have bought and then sold coins/collections, these favorable conditions wont always persist. So, if you were to buy one now, and wanted to up-grade it later, it might be more costly than anticipated to make up a dealer's buy/sell spread.

I think part of the enjoyment is the search. If you don't like it then your "search" was in vain if you keep this one.

But really... going with the majority here. If you think it hurts now... wait until you try to sell it for $5K. Send it back and wait for the right coin.

I'm late to the game here, but I strongly agree with the other folks that if you don't like it, nothing we can say will make you like it.

I'd like to add that this one looks scruffy for a 63. Ms. Liberty needing a shave? No, that won't do. I think you are right to pass.

As far as you not affording a 64 and thinking you'll look for a pl, presumably in 63, I would guess that ain't going to happen. I would guess a 63pl would trade close to or above a 64.

I am impressed with the knowledgeable advice you have received, and applaud all the forum members.

Like the others said, If the coin does not give you the "warm and fuzzys", return it.

Also, it does not look very nice for a 63 -- I would think you could even find a nicer 63. The 64 posted by dwssss blows away your 63 -- that would cinch the "return" decision for me. An extra $1,500 to $2,000 for a 64 like that would be well worth the wait, and a much easier coin to sell if you had to.

Go with your first impression and return it while you KNOW that you can get your $$$ back. If yu keep the coin, it will gnaw away at you until you go bat's ass nuts and you won't be very happy. I'm sure that whoever you got it from will be happy to look for another. AND now you know that you can't always judge a coin from pix

Return it. The 79-CC in choice is not a rare coin. You can always find another one. The best collections are assembled patiently with a discerning eye for quality as I am sure you are trying to do too. Good luck finding thr RIGHT one. Perhaps through a little more cash in the litty each week that passes without a hit so you hae more funds for the PQ piece that has a preium makup.

Keep the coin.... save up for what you really want, then sell the least favorable. During this time, you will have completed the set... Now the fun begins image upgrading..... it is like fine wine. Take some time to enjoy what you have so diligently amassed to this point and be grateful. Watch the boards.... that coin you long to have will fall in your lap in time.

Thanks guys ... the dealer already pm'ed me and offered to take it back. He has always given me great customer service and every other coin that I have received from him has been spectacular. I do have to say that I have since reviewed all of the 79-CC MS63's for sale on Heritage, and this one is way better than any of them. I guess that it is just a tough year for CC Morgans. Nonetheless, this is my first return and the dealer made me feel like he happy to provide a refund. I will definitely be doing more business with him in the future.

Thanks again for your comments image

Fletcher: Based on other expensive Morgans that I've seen you post on the forum, the dealer is doing the right thing for his customer service, and he's also keeping you (a valuable client) happy.

Congratulations to your coin dealer, who is taking good care of you!!

I'm with everyone else. A nice coin will always be easier to sell in the long run. Should you keep this in hopes of upgrading later, it might disappoint someone else, and you very well could lose money. You have the chance to return it, so do so.

The better you know what you want, the more quickly you'll be able to realize when a coin is a keeper or not. Even if a coin is nice, it might not be what you're looking for, and in those cases, you should return it. If you're not happy now, you won't ever be happy. Return the coin and keep your eyes out for a better one.

Yup just like the bored members here who have been waitin since Christ was a kid for a 79-CC in au53, 55 or 58 to fall into their lap. If you return it now you are guaranteed $5K back but if you wait who knows what you will get.
