Eagle images on US coins - Which is best?

Of all the eagles, on all the coins, which is best?

By the way, I happen to like the swept wing image on the reverse of the SAC Dollars. image

For some reason I prefer this odd rendition, which also graces the reverse of the trade dollar:

If I had to choose a second favorite, it would be the eagle portrayed on the incuse indian head quarter and half eagles, and the indian eagle like this:

I like the POW commem best of all, I think. The St Gaudens $10 is superb too.

  • For me it has to be the Flying Eagle cent...followed closely by the Bella Lyon Pratt golds.

The Saint Gaudens double eagle and the Sacagawea dollar both have nice eagles.

I've always wondered why so many of our coins have Eagles on them. Why not Falcons, Hawks, Roosters, etc? Everywhere I go I see Pigeons, not Eagles, so why not put Pigeons on some of the coins. Anyone know?

The Bald Eagle is the emblem of the United States - that's also why it is on most official sceals. Ben Franklin felt it was a bad choice and recommended the Turkey instead.

This being said, the large Pan-Pac Commem "slugs" had a Great Horned Owl on the reverse. I like them...

Some coins are just plain "Interesting"
  • As I recall, federal law requires all silver and gold coins >$.10 to include an Eagle on the coin. That is why the tiny eagle was added to the reverse of the Franklin half.

  • VERY nice photo of that coin. It was the one I was going to use, but I couldn't get a very good photo of it. But after seeing that one, I tried again:

Still no where near as good as that one. Mine is NGC PF70 Ultra Cameo.

Not too shabby Boggledmind! Mine is a 69DCAM in PCGS. I took it using the Marty/Russ inspired lampshade light diffusion method and a Coolpix 775 on macro setting.

I love the eagle on the back of the Connecticut commemorative. He's a SERIOUS bad ass!

Baley's modern eagle is one of my favorites, great image too.

    And I love Lake's example.

I love the defiant eagle, especially in bronze.

    image

But I have a profound respect for all the eagle designs on US coins.
