S Proof Kennedy vs Silver Proof

Believe it or not, whild searching through thousands of Kennedys obtained from banks, I came across two proof coins. One is a 1996. How do I tell the difference between a 1996-S and a 1996-S Silver? I have the Mint Proof Set and the Premier Silver Proof Set, but can't see a difference in the two. I would like to classify it correctly. The coin is in excellent shape, to have been in circulation.

Look at the edge for a copper layer. No layer, it's silver. If it has the layer, it's clad.

Of course, now I am scratching my head wondering why I wasn't smart enough to figure that out.

    Genetics? Drugs? Ozone layer depletion?

I found a 1989 Kennedy proof in circulation. When I first saw it, I thought WOW MS-70. Then saw the darn 'S'.

  • They are both clad. I don't remember the date of the other one. It was in very good shape for a circulated coin, but did have several light scratches on it. I put it in a 2x2 for my 7 year old son (getting him interested in the hoby).
  • Badger - A couple of years ago I found a bicentennial clad proof and thought the exact same thing. Then I saw the S mintmark. Still kind of neat to find it in a circulation roll.
