California Fractional Gold

I am a new collector and I would like to find out if this type of coin is safe to buy, I have heard it is often counterfited. If it is certified by PCGS would that authenticate it?

Thanks,

No one is perfect in that regard, but yes.

Authenticity is one concern. Paying a fair/reasonable price should be another - please check it out before you buy something you don't know much about.

    westflorida,

i am new to collecting coins in general. nothing worries me more
than collecting cali fractional gold. even slabbed in PCGS holders,
the coins still look odd and crude. they are tiny and most people
will need magnification to see them properly.

if i was you, i would start by looking at them slabbed only, find
online material, and discuss them here before buying. books help
also if you wish to invest money in them.

You should buy them certified. Before spending any money on coins in this series you should do considerable research. These tend to be promoted from time to time.

    They certify these coins?

Never seen those before like that.....

If they do that is the only way I would buy those till I became an expert on the topic.....

I would still have Cal Fractional Gold pocket pieces certified/slabbed even after having the knowledge. Why?

Do you have any idea how friggin' small these dang things are? Imagine looking for one of them after they slip out of your 2x2???image

Here is an example of a lovely $1 octagonal piece (notice that I never call them coins) slabbed by PCGS over 10 years ago!!

The fact that they are crude and so small is part of their charm. I collect these and I've never seen a true counterfeit. What you are talking about are fantasy pieces that don't resemble any real coin. The most popular fantasy piece has a bear on it. No real Cal fractional gold coin has a bear as part of its design. Also, the Indians on these coins aren't even close to the original designs. For most people, this is the only way to aford a privately issued gold coin from the gold rush era.

Worry is the interest you pay on a debt you may not owe.

get the reference material before you buy - lots of modern replicas on the bay of flea as defined by perry hall.
